2003-04 Euroleague, phase by phase
The 2003-04 Final Four started with one clear favorite, two teams built for the future and one underdog and proceeded to deliver four exciting games, including overtime in one semifinal, a double-digit comeback in the other, a third-place game that went to the wire and a final that set or tied 11 records! When all was said and done, Maccabi Elite and Final Four MVP Anthony Parker celebrated a 118-74 mauling of Skipper Bologna in the title game in front of a sold-out crowd decked in yellow at Nokia Arena. Team captain Gur Shelef was joined by veteran Derrick Sharp to lift the trophy as Maccabi claimed its fourth continental triumph and added to a growing dynasty that would continue to play at the highest levels in Europe for years to come.
EUROLEAGUE FINAL: MACCABI ELITE VS. SKIPPER BOLOGNA
Maccabi Elite used the biggest stage available to pronounce its attack as one of the greatest in Euroleague history with a record-setting 118-74 victory over Skipper Bologna in front of a sold-out crowd at Nokia Arena in its hometown Tel Aviv. Maccabi set or tied 11 records, including the most points scored in a Euroleague final, best shooting and largest margin of victory. Anthony Parker was named Final Four MVP after scoring 21 to lead an attack that saw 11 players score a basket. David Bluthenthal came off the bench for 20 points in 17 minutes – shooting 4 for 5 from downtown – Sarunas Jasikevicius added 18 and Tal Burstein produced 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. The celebrations for the club’s fourth continental title went deep into the Tel Aviv night as hundreds of thousands packed the national park to celebrate with their heroes.
3RD PLACE GAME: MONTEPASCHI SIENA VS. CSKA MOSCOW
The 2004 third-place game lived up to expectations as an offensive thriller as CSKA Moscow stormed back from a 19-point third-quarter deficit to win 94-97. Marcus Brown scored 27 – shooting 12 for 12 from the free-throw line – and dished 6 assists to pace CSKA, which lost to Montepaschi in the third-place game in 2003 in Barcelona. The win gave CSKA a top seed looking ahead to the 2004-05 Euroleague season, which was to end with the Final Four staged in Moscow. Montepaschi led 56-40 at halftime and extended the difference even more in the third quarter before Marcus Brown came alive with 15 points in that period to lead CSKA back. The game would go to the wire before Montepaschi’s David Vanterpool lost the ball on the final play, allowing CSKA to celebrate the victory.
SEMIFINAL: MONTEPASCHI SIENA VS. SKIPPER BOLOGNA
Skipper Bologna outlasted Montepaschi Siena 102-103 after overtime in an all-Italian duel in the first semifinal in Tel Aviv to reach the Euroleague title game for the first time. Carlos Delfino's free throw with 11.6 seconds left in overtime broke a tie and crowned him the hero as Delfino posted 27 points for the winners. It was a cat-and-mouse game for much of regulation, with Bologna leading by 9 at halftime and 13 at one point in the third quarter, but Montepaschi always came back and eventually forced overtime on Michailis Kakiouzis’s three-pointer with 11.2 seconds to go. The game produced more thrills in the additional five minutes, but it was Skipper and its squad of stars-in-the making that eventually came out on top.
SEMIFINAL: MACCABI ELITE VS. CSKA MOSCOW
Maccabi Elite held off CKSA Moscow 93-85 to climb into the title game. Maccabi, playing on its home court at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, started sluggishly and trailed by 11 points at one point, but turned it around to get within 1 at halftime and pull away in the second half as the fans in yellow rocked on. Anthony Parker was the star of the show with 27 points – including a number of alley-oop dunks, several of which came from Sarunas Jasikevicius, who tallied 18 points and 6 assists. CSKA’s Marcus Brown, who shined when CSKA beat Maccabi in a regular season game in Tel Aviv several months earlier, paced his team with 23 points and 6 assists.
