Adam Waczynski: 'The Polish King Kong was born in Malaga!'

Hey guys, it's me again – the Polish King Kong – haha! Yes, that is my nickname here in Malaga! It is funny because this nickname was invented by a Unicaja fan! It was halftime at one of our home games and I was going to the locker room. I looked at him in the stands and saw him. This fan was very excited with the way I was playing, so I started to hit my chest with my fist to show him how motivated I was and how much I liked to see him enjoying himself so much. And that was it, the beginning! The Polish King Kong was born in Malaga!

It is all good in Malaga and Unicaja until now. We had a really amazing start to the season! We have played 18 games between the Spanish League and the 7DAYS EuroCup, and have won 15 of them. That's right – only three losses in 18 games – wow! I have been told it is one of the best starts of the season for Unicaja Malaga, if not the best! In our last EuroCup home game against Mornar Bar, we broke a single-game scoring record in European competitions - 111! Wow, again!

"In every situation, we always have something hilarious to talk about!"

We have had some really great moments so far, but being honest, for me, it is even more important how we did it. You can win a lot of games, but if you don't have a good atmosphere, sooner or later the team will fall apart. That is not the case with Unicaja. The atmosphere on this team is great! We are having fun every day we step on the court to play games, but we also enjoy a lot our practices and, of course, our team dinners, which are the best. Every time, in every situation, we always have something hilarious to talk about. We laugh at each other a lot and make a lot of jokes. We really enjoy our time together!

That is the secret for such a good start to the season. We come to the arena and already know that all of us are going to have an amazing time. When you are having a good time, it is always much easier to work, and usually good results follow.

Don't get me wrong – of course, we do our job, follow our coaches' advice, and play hard. We figure out our mistakes and try not to repeat them again. We try to improve as a team every day and, of course, we want to compete for every single win because every game is important. All that is essential to get a lot of wins. But if you have played any sports or have been in a good working environment, you will understand that when you enjoy doing what you love to do, the work is easier to do in a good atmosphere, no question about it. And the results are even better!

"We reset our minds after every game and start over."

Another great factor for us is psychology. Every day, our coaches are doing a good job to keep us motivated. It is easy to learn from losses and mistakes because there is a lot of analyzing, but some teams can relax when they are winning, thinking everything they are doing is right. And this is basketball, nobody plays a perfect game. When you win – and thankfully, we are winning a lot of games lately – you need to have that extra motivation to do things even better. The sky is the limit and we need to improve every day even if we are playing great. Our coaches know that and we talk about motivation every day. That information stays in our head and that helps us keep winning. We reset our minds after every game and start over. And this is the key: don't think about the past, think about the present. What can I do now to help the team succeed one more time? That is the approach.

Stay focused, enjoy what you do, think about today and the next step. Thanks for reading!

By the way, I would like to wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay healthy and stay tuned for more 7DAYS EuroCup games. See you in the Top 16!
