Paris 2010: Another classic matchup
It was a privilege to be able to sit courtside and broadcast the 2010 Final Four games for ELTV. Sitting so close to the court enabled us to fully appreciate the impressive speed, strength and athleticism of these players. All four games were incredible, so much so that Partizan and its fans really left a lasting impression on all of us, even though they finished in fourth place. Partizan came in as the underdog and lost two heartbreaking games in overtime. It was Bo McCalebb's first time on the big stage and there were times that he absolutely dominated the action by finishing incredible drives to the basket through traffic as well as scoring from long range. Jan Vesely was also spectacular for Partizan. CSKA, which was appearing in its record eighth straight Final Four, challenged Barca early before losing in the fourth quarter of the other semifinal.
The title game was a very interesting matchup between FC Regal Barcelona and Olympiacos. Barcelona finally faced a team that was not afraid to play an uptempo game. Most teams that season attempted to slow the pace of the game because Barcelona was simply too good in the open court. Olympiacos had little to fear since it was loaded with talent. Linas Klieza, who was that season’s Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner, and Josh Childress were on the wings and were directed by guards Theo Papaloukas, Scoonie Penn, Patrick Beverley and freshly crowned MVP Milos Teodosic. Big Sofoklis Schortsanitis, Ioannis Bourousis and Nikola Vujcic made for serious inside threats.
Barcelona was a dominant team that combined a versatile frontcourt full of height and athleticism with a stellar backcourt that included Ricky Rubio and lesser known, but equally important, Victor Sada along with Mr. Everything Juan Carlos Navarro and a tough, experienced veteran in Pete Mickeal. Even though Barca's offense garnered most of the attention, the most impressive characteristic about that Barcelona team was its defense. They had Rubio and Sada hawking the ball while Fran Vasquez, Terence Morris and Boniface Ndong all played well over the basket to protect the rim.
Barca's defense enabled it to get into transition and score easy baskets in a hurry. Rubio and Sada pushed the ball up court and fed teammates with alley-oop passes above the rim or found sharpshooters like Navarro and Gianluca Basile spotting up behind the three-point line. Barca was truly focused that season and the final game was no different as Barcelona won the competition that it dominated that entire season.
Among the highlights for the Barcelona camp was when midway through the second quarter, stars of the FC Barcelona football team Bojan Krkic, Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Busquets, Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique arrived fresh from a Spanish League game to support their clubmates and watch as Barca romped to its second Euroleague crown.
