FF Final: Panathinaikos 93-91 CSKA Moscow
The Greens defeated defending champion CSKA Moscow 93-91 in a thrilling final at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA) in the Greek capital on Sunday to take their first title in five years. In front of a very green sold-out crowd, Panathinaikos captain Fragiskos Alvertis raised the new Euroleague Basketball trophy as the proud club celebrated its fourth Euroleague title – the most of any team in the Final Four era. Final Four MVP Dimitris Diamantidis scored 15 points and displayed the needed leadership to take his team to glory. Newly crowned Euroleague MVP Theodoros Papaloukas did his best to carry the outgoing champs, scoring a career-high 23 points on 9-of-10 from the field to go with 8 assists, but it wasn't enough. Matjaz Smodis finished with 18 points and Trajan Langdon, who was instrumental in CSKA's late rally with 11 fourth-quarter points, wound up with 16. J.R. Holden added 11.
FF Semifinal, Champs back to final: CSKA 62-50 Unicaja
CSKA Moscow is back in the Euroleague title game! The defending champs overcame Unicaja 62-50 Friday evening in the first semifinal of the 2007 Euroleague Final Four at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall in the Greek capital. David Andersen had 12 points and 9 rebounds and Theodoros Papaloukas scored 11, dished 4 assists and had 5 big steals to lead CSKA. Trajan Langdon led CSKA with 13 points and Matjaz Smodis added 8 points and 8 rebounds.
COACH INTERVIEW, Ettore Messina
The only coach back from last year's Final Four, Ettore Messina has his team revved up and ready to make a run at history with back-to-back Euroleague titles. If ever there was someone who knows how difficult and how rewarding a task that can be it's Messina, winner of last season's Aleksander Gomelski Euroleague Coach of the Year Trophy.
PLAYER INTERVIEW, Thomas Van den Spiegel
To say that the Final Four is an international event of the tallest order could be taken two ways. The global basketball community is certainly paying attention, both in person and from afar, due to worldwide coverage.
FINAL FOUR BLOGGER, David Vanterpool
What's up? CSKA made the Final Four for the fifth consecutive time, which I believe is a record. It's great to be part of someting special like that and have the opportunity to go to another Final Four. This is my third Final Four in four years and it is always special to be there.
FINAL FOUR FAN MAIL, Oscar Torres
It is rare enough for any player to join the defending Euroleague champions in midseason. When that player is a 31-year-old veteran who has never played in the competition before and becomes a starter within weeks, it is even more interesting.
FINAL FOUR VIDEO PROFILE, J. R. Holden
Since arriving at CSKA Moscow five years ago as an accomplished scorer, point guard
has made it his business to improve his defense every season. At age 30 and about to compete in his fifth consecutive Final Four, Holden has gone through just about everything at the highest levels, from losing three straight Final Four semifinals to lifting the Euroleague trophy in Prague last season.
