THE TAKE

Bizkaia Bilbao Basket will look to secure its spot in the Eurocup quarterfinals when it hosts Brose Baskets Bamberg in Group K. Bilbao is undefeated this season with nine straight wins and is coming off a 55-76 road win at Bamberg. All-Eurocup forward Marko Banic led the way with 18 points and head coach Fotios Katsikaris’s men limited Bamberg to just 6 second-quarter points to secure the win. A deep bench and a balanced and efficient attack led by Banic have been the keys to Bilbao’s success all season. The team ranks second in the Last 16 in two-point shooting 62.7% and in turnovers (11.3 TOpg.). Brose Baskets enters the game with a 1-2 mark in Group K, but with only one home game remaining, it will be looking to steal a road win to better its quarterfinal chances. To do so, head coach Chris Fleming’s men must improve their offense, which so far is bottom in the Last 16 in scoring (63.3 ppg.), three-point shooting (24.3%) and free throw shooting (65%). Bamberg’s most important offensive players are both on the perimeter with swingman Casey Jacobsen and forward Predrag Suput, however the whole offense is dependant upon the ability of centers Elton Brown and Tibor Pleiss to contribute inside. The playmaking duties are split between Anton Gavel and John Goldsberry, while Brian Roberts starts at shooting guard. Bilbao counters with former Eurocup champ Jerome Moiso anchoring the defense at center, while Banic teams with Alex Mumbru, Damir Markota and Axel Hervelle at the forward spots. Janis Blums, Javi Salgado and Chris Warren see most of the minutes at guard, though Javi Rodriguez could also play a big role. The key for Bilbao could be as simple as making sure Moiso can stop Bamberg inside, which might stall the visitors’ attack. Bamberg will look to stop Banic, trying to use both Suput and Brown and perhaps even reserve Eric Taylor. Although Bilbao’s track record at home makes it the favorite, Bamberg will give its best effort for a season-changing win.

Jerome Moiso - Bizkaia Bilbao BasketBizkaia Bilbao Basket became the first team to reach the 2010 Eurocup Quarterfinal when it downed Brose Baskets Bamberg 76-66 on Tuesday. Bilbao remained undefeated this season and improved to 4-0 in Group K, guaranteeing it at least second place in the group. Meanwhile Bamberg dropped to 1-3 and saw its chances of reaching the Quarterfinals suffer a blow. Brose Baskets hung around for a long time and tied the game at 48-48 late in the third quarter, but Bilbao went on an 11-0 charge that bridged the third and fourth quarters in which Chris Warren scored 5 points to take control for good. Marko Banic shook off a slow start to score some big baskets to wrap up the win early. Jerome Moiso paced the Bilbao attack with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, Alex Mumbru added 11 points and Renaldas Seibutis had 10. Brian Roberts led Bamberg with 18 points, Elton Brown posted 13 points and 9 rebounds and Casey Jacobsen added 12 points in defeat.

Brose Baskets won the opening tip and opened the scoring through Predrag Suput. Moiso corrected his own miss to get Bilbao on the scoreboard and then added a slam on the next play before Janis Blums put the hosts up 7-2 from downtown. Tibor Pleiss scored in the paint only to see Axel Hervelle and Warren continue to push the hosts. Hevelle made it 18-11 from the line before Bamberg heated up. Newcomer Mark Worthington scored his first points for the club, Roberts drilled a triple and Brown scored inside to tie the score. Mumbru had the last word, though, hitting a three to give Bilbao a 21-18 lead after 10 minutes. Moiso continued his excellent play in the paint with a pair of baskets that stretched the lead to 7. Damir Markota and again Moiso were accurate to keep the margin at 7. However a Roberts basket and assist to Robert Garrett for a three suddenly made it a 2-point game. Garrett matched Markota’s next basket, but Paco Vazquez came through with a clutch three. Roberts ended the half with a basket to get Brose Baskets within 38-35.

John Goldsberry opened the second half with a steal and layup and soon Brown fed Jacobsen to put Bamberg up 1. The lead traded hands several times over the enxt several possessions Bilbao went up by 3 only to see a Goldsberry triple make it 46-46. Mumbru and Worthington matched free throws before Seibutis scored a pair of baskets to give the hosts a 52-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Markota fed Banic for the latter’s first basket and Warren scored 5 in a row to cap an 11-0 charge and make it 59-48. Jacobsen ended the Bamberg drought with a free throw, however Banic soon made a free throw to make it a 13-point game. Jacobsen made a three to give Bamberg hope, but Banic also hit from behind the arc as did Markota as Bilbao wrapped the win and a quarterfinal berth.

KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"It is always important to win after a loss - in the Spanish King's Cup - in order to regain confidence in our game. I am happy with this win in general terms. It was a dangerous game, as we came off a loss and they played without pressure. We now need to focus on this weekend's Spanish League game, which is very important for us. We were a bit slow in the first half, allowing our opponents to dominate the paint. I think it is the first time that we won and our opponent got more rebounds than us. We didn't play good defense in the first half, but Ronnie Seibutis helped us a lot when he stepped on court."
FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"We knew that Bilbao was a strong team and it was important for us to play defense at a great level. We managed to do it for the best part of the game and we were tough under the baskets, but paid a high prize for our many turnovers, which did not allow us to get the lead or be in the game at the crucial moments. The game was decided early in the fourth quarter, when Bilbao made 10-of-11 shots. We were not able to stay in the game missing easy shots."
