THE TAKE

Two teams will different goals will go against each other in Group C when Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Benetton Treviso in Istanbul on Wednesday at 19:15 CET. Fenerbahce (2-7) is already in a do-or-die situation and needs to start winning right away in order to advance to the Top 16. Meanwhile, Benetton (6-3) won four of its last five games and ca begin to aim high if it returns to Treviso with a valuable road win. Both teams faced each other in Treviso on November 8, with Benetton winning 93-83 behind 17 points each from Nikos Zisis and Marcus Goree. Kaspars Kambala (14.6 ppg.) had 25 points for Fenerbahce that night. Benetton will be without star power forward Goree (14.6 ppg., 7.3 rpg.), who is suffering from a calf injury and did not travel with the team to Turkey. With Goree down, Fenerbahce can focus on shutting down Treviso's motor, Zisis (13.2 ppg., 5.4 apg.), who leads the league in assists. Zisis sees time at both guard spots along with Terrell Lyday (8.9 ppg.) and Marco Mordente (11.6 ppg., 68% 3FG), who is playing better as the regular season advances. Willie Solomon (11 ppg., 4.2 apg.) will be the man to watch on Fenerbahce's perimeter, helped by Eddie Basdem (6 ppg.), Hakan Demirel and combo guard Omer Onan (5.1 ppg.), who had 13 points in his team's road loss against Pau-Orthez. With Richie Frahm still sidelined, team captain Matteo Moragna (8 ppg.) and forward Spencer Nelson (11.4 ppg., 7.7 rpg., 2.7 apg.) will see their playing time extended, as newcomer Preston Shumpert is ineligible to play until the start of the Top 16. Soragna will have the tough mission to guard legendary shooter Ibrahim Kutluay (13.9 ppg.), who will get some help from Damir Mrsic (10.3 ppg.) and Solomon for scoring duties. The battle in the paint will be interesting, as Fenerbahce is ready to fight with players like Kambala, rebounding machine Mirsad Turkcan (8.7 ppg., 9.6 rpg.), center Ira Clark (3 rpg.) and youngsters Oguz Savas (3.6 ppg.) and Semih Erden (5.7 ppg.). Benetton will look to Angelo Gigli (6.7 ppg., 57.1% 3FG) and especially Joey Beard (2.7 rpg.) to play crucial roles in this game, making up for Goree's production. Expect a balanced showdown, as this game may well crucial in the future of both teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
“This is the first of our last five matches, which we have to win for sure. The only way for us to reach the Top 16 is to win all the rest of the games. So from now on, there’s nothing to say strategically, but to only talk about the win. Our main problem since than the beginning of the season is defense. We talked many times that we have to lessen our mistakes on defense, but couldn’t turn it to reality. The Benetton game is one of the last five chances. We have a real good and experienced opponent, who also has ability to focus on the critical games. We will try to do everything we can despite our handicaps.”
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"We are doing a good job in the Euroleague and we will try to continue that way with this game on the road, even if we have some troubles with injured players. Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul is a talented team, led by an experienced coach, with quality on the boards and outside. They have had some great results in the Turkish League and we know that playing in their home is not so easy, but we will have to try to keep up our winning streak going in Europe."

KUTLUAY, IBRAHIM
Fenerbahce Ulker
“We promised each other in the last week that we will fight with all our aim in the last five matches. It’s really sad to see our our fans upset. For them to forgive us, we have to play with our hearts. Benetton is one of the traditional teams of Euroleague and that makes our job double harder. But the thing we knew since the beginning of the season, but still couldn’t prove is that we are a good team too. This is our first do-or-die game and we don’t want to give up the fight early.”
GIGLI, ANGELO
Benetton Basket
"If we win this game, it could mean an important step forward in the standings for Top 16 qualification, so we need to give 100% on the floor to take it. Our opponent is a strong team. The key to getting the [win] could be defense, especially in the paint where they can have many different solutions. We will have to be extremely intense and aggressive from the beginning.”
Will Solomon - Fenerbahce Ulker Fenerbahce Ulker scored a 70-58 win over visiting Benetton Treviso on Wednesday at the Abdi Ipekçi Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey, to remain in the hunt for a spot in the Top 16. Kaspars Kambala scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Fenerbahce improved to 3-7 in Group C. Benetton dropped to 6-4, but will remain in third place after Pau-Orthez lost at CSKA Moscow earlier in the evening. Kambala also drew 11 fouls, decimating an already thin Benetton frontline, which was missing star power forward Marcus Goree who was out with an injury. Will Solomon scored 14 of his 18 points in the first quarter to help the hosts take the early lead and Damir Mrsic picked up the scoring in the second as Fenerbahce led 36-28. Spencer Nelson helped Benetton close to within 48-44 in the third, but the defensive efforts of Rasim Basak and Omer Onan allowed the hosts to rebuild quickly on the way to the big win. Mrsic finished with 14 for Fenerbahce. Marco Mordente led Benetton with 15, while Angelo Gigli added 12 and Joey Beard had 9 rebounds before fouling out.

Fenerbahce started with some aggressive defense, but struggled to score in the first couple of minutes. Nelson put Benetton on the board first after just 34 seconds. Solomon responded for the hosts with a three that was a sign of what was to come. Bryant Smith's three-pointer after three minutes helped swing the lead back to Treviso, but Solomon was just getting started. He added two more threes and a two-pointer, giving him 11 as Fenerbahce took a 13-9 lead midway through the period. Eddie Basden's layup completed an 8-0 that put the hosts up 6. Benetton tried a zone defense, but Solomon punished it with another triple to end the period at 18-11.

Angelo Gigli - Benetton TrevisoBenetton strengthened its defense in the second period and made it hard for the home team to score. The man-to-man defense worked well and Mordente’s points carried the visitors back. His 7 points on a triple and two layups reduced the gap to 24-22. Fenerbahce, held to 4 points in six minutes, responded through Kambala’s two free throws plus followed by two Mrsic three pointers for an 8-1 run as the hosts built a 32-23 advantage. Benetton once again turned to zone defense, but couldn't cut away at the difference as the score sat at 36-28 at halftime.

Fenerbahce started to play inside on Kambala, breaking away Benetton's defensive wall. After a pair of Kambala layups and a three from Mrsic, Fenerbahce's lead swelled to 44-31. Beard picked up his fourth foul, but managed to remain in the game as Mordente drilled a three-pointer and Smith dropped in a layup to make it 48-40. Nelson brought Benetton within 4 from the line, but the home team – led by Basak and Onan – stepped up on defense to keep Treviso at bay. Mrsic hit another critical three from the left side and a little later Onan finished a fast break to make it 53-44 for the home team. Speedy Onan made another basket in transition to end the third period score at 57-46 for Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce remained strong on defense in the last quarter, while Kambala was unstoppable on the other end. The Latvian center broke Benetton with his strong inside game, taking his team to a 61-46 advantage. Mordente’s three pointer made it 63-51, but Onan's fastbreak layup at 35.39 extended the lead once again to 14 points. Benetton pulled its big men and tried to catch Fener with a fast game and outside shots, but the things didn't work well for Benetton as Fenerbahce snatched the win.

Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"If we analyse the first game in Treviso, we see that we conceded 58 points just in the first half. In this game, we let Benetton score 58 points in the whole game. It's true that we struggled in offense tonight. All the players are valuable for us and I'm really proud of the way my players defended tonight. They were all doing well and many times, they were diving for the ball. This is a new beginning for us in 2007 and we can describe this win as the first step of the miracle. But it's going to be a miracle if we can fill the other steps. We have two more games at home, which we must win for sure. And if we can have a chance to get a win from the two away games, we can complete the miracle. We will try as hard as we can for it."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"First of all, congratulations to Fenerbahce and their coach for their win. Under the circumstances, our guys played very hard and I thought they gave an extraordinary effort to win the game. We were supposed to come here yesterday evening. But our flight cancelled and we remained in Italy. We had another flight early in the morning. One of the key elements of the game was that both teams defended well. We won the rebounds and the turnovers challenge in the game. But Fenerbahce did better to score rather than we did. 33 percentage in shooting is not enough to win a game in Euroleague."

Players

SOLOMON, WILLIE
Fenerbahce Ulker
"I'm really proud to see my teammates making a great effort for defense tonight. This is the first time that we have succeeded on this part of the game. I hope this is just the beginning and it goes the same way in the remanining matches. Because the only way to go into Top 16 is passing through excellent defense."
ZISIS, NIKOS
Benetton Basket
"I think we really challenged well against Fenerbahce despite the travelling trouble that we had. We haven't had a chance to make any practice both last evening and this morning and didn't sleep well. But this is not the only reason for the loss of course. We were not on our good day to score. We had really good wide open shots but Fenerbahce did it better than us."
