THE TAKE

Two teams with the goal of reaching the Eurocup Finals will clash on Wednesday in Greece where Panellinios BC hosts Gran Canaria 2014 in the opening leg of their home-and-away Quarterfinals series. Panellinios placed second in Last 16 Group K on a tiebreaker after posting a 4-2 record despite injuries that ravaged the team. Gran Canaria won Group L with a 4-2 record. Granca is one of the great home teams in the history of the competition, which puts emphasis on Panellinios to start well and win the first game by as large a margin as possible. Of course Garn Canaria, which recorded a pair of road wins thus far this season, will be looking to win. The game is the third between the clubs this season. Panellinios opened the season with a resounding 89-60 home win over Granca led by Devin Smiths 25 points. Gran Canaria won 73-51 on the Canary Islands in January as James Augustine posted 19 points and 9 rebounds. While Gran Canaria enters the series with the same players it had in those games, Panellinios lost Josh Davis and Britton Johnsen to injury and replaced them with veteran forward Chris Owens. Panellinios head coach Ilias Zouros relies on his backcourt for much of the teams scoring needs. Point guard Rod Blakney orchestrates the attack alongside sharpshooter Manolis Papamakarios, while Smith is an athletic small forward who can score from inside and out. Sixth man Kostas Charalampidis is an excellent scoring option off the bench. Blakney will face Grancas veteran playmaker Marcus Norris, with Tomas Bellas bringing energy off the bench. Jaycee Carroll will test his scoring skills against Papamakarios and Charalampidis, while Jim Moran and Melvin Sanders await Smith. In the paint, Panellinios centers Ian Vougioukas and Djuro Ostojic will encounter Will McDonald and Sitapha Savane, while Owens joins with Alekos Petroulos for the hosts at power forward to battle Augustine. There wont be many surprises when the teams meet for the third time this season, but there will be much intensity since this game could be the most important of them all.

Papamakarios struck from downtown and a reverse layup by Vougioukas capped a 14-0 run and made it a nine-point game, 57-48. Carroll rescued Gran Canaria with a triple but a nine-meter bomb by Papamakarios kept the hosts way ahead, 60-51, after 30 minutes. Charalampidis and Savane traded baskets early in the fourth quarter, as Panellinios had started to miss open shots from downtown. Savane hit free throws and Josh Fisher added a triple for a 62-58 Gran Canaria deficit with 6 minutes left. Savane stayed on fire with a close basket that Papamakarios bettered with his third three-pointer. Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios Opap
"My players deserve to be congratulated for their effort against a very good team that almost beat Real Madrid in the Spanish League a few days ago. This should remind us that there are no easy games in basketball. Gran Canaria had a good start and Carroll played the way he did against Madrid last week. We did not rebound well in the first half, but managed to do better after the break. The difference does not guarantee a Eurocup Finals spot, because we must now fight in the hottest place in Spain. Gran Canaria has been able to get 20- and 25-point wins at home. We will try to protect our lead. I want to thank those who came today, the administration is always with us and supports us. We will travel to the Canary Islands a day before the game in order to acclimate."
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Gran Canaria 2014
"We knew it would be a very difficult game. We played well in the first half, but Panellinios is a good team and improved after the break. They played better than us and scored great baskets, especially in the third quarter. They have players with character such as Blakney, Smith and Papamakarios. We will fight in the next game to reach our goal."

Players

VOUGIOUKAS, IAN
Panellinios Opap
"We showed character as a team and won a very important game for us. We were focused and really wanted to win. We started a little loose, but then some players took over, we shot well and minimized our mistakes in defense. This 11-point win is the sign that we did a good job today. We will hopefully win the series at their place next week."
CARROLL, JAYCEE
Gran Canaria 2014
"We played really bad in the regular season game we had in here and did not want that to happen again. We worked hard to do well against a very competitive team. They moved the ball well, which allowed them to hit important shots. I hope that our arena will be packed to help us to win the series."
