THE TAKE

Real Madrid returns to the friendly confines of the Palacio Vistalegre in the Spanish capital to host Montepaschi Siena in a Group C clash on Thursday. Montepaschi ended a two-game slide last week by downing Pau-Orthez 77-72 at home behind Andrea Pecile's 17 points off the bench. Montepaschi guard Justin Hamilton will face Madrid for the first time since he helped the team take the Spanish title last year. Madrid aims to bounce back from its first defeat of the season last week 64-52 at CSKA Moscow, in which it played its best defense of the Euroleague season, but struggled to score. Point guard Igor Rakocevic (11.7 ppg.) came back from an injury to lead Madrid with 13 points. On Thursday, Rakocevic will be guarded by the man he replaced, Hamilton (5.6 ppg, 2.2 steals), who is quite familiar with the hoops in Madrid. The other backcourt match-up could be equally interesting as high-scoring guards Luis Bullock (14.2 ppg., 2.4 spg.) of Madrid and Duane Woodward (14.4 ppg., 2.8 spg.) of Montepaschi face off. Both are capable of going off for a big night when they get going. Madrid's big men will have quite a few players guarding them as Montepaschi goes five deep at the four and five spots. Shaun Stonerook (6.6 rpg. in 21mpg) is the only Montepaschi big man averaging over 20 minutes per game as Benjamin Eze, Roberto Chiacig, Vladimer Boisa (5.4 ppg.), and Marcelo Nicola (7.4 ppg. in 14 mpg.) make up the rest of their minutes. That committee will need to contain Felipe Reyes (9.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg.), Axel Herville (11.6 ppg.) and intimidator Venson Hamilton (1.6 bpg.). Madrid boasts the best defensive squad in the league, allowing just 62.4 points per game. On the other end, Montepaschi (71 ppg.) is not among the highest-scoring teams. Those stats point to what could be a low-scoring, tight game, where any one hot hand can make the different. The X-factor for the home team could be athletic small forward Mickael Gelabale (11.6 ppg, 1.6 bpg), who can make a difference on both sides of the court. Montepaschi guard Rimantas Kaukenas (12.8 ppg.) could play the same role for the visitors.

Real Madrid bounced back from its first Group C loss by edging Montepaschi Siena 65-61 at home in Madrid, Spain on Thursday. Madrid improved to 5-1 and remains tied for first place Panathinaikos. Montepaschi dropped to 3-3 and is fifth in the group standings, but two victories ahead of sixth place. Igor Rakocevic led the winners with 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Louis Bullock had 12 points, Axel Hervelle added 10 while Felipe Reyes grabbed 11 rebounds for Real Madrid. Rimantas Kaukenas had 16 points for Montepaschi, Duane Woodward had 12 and Shaun Stonerook 11 for the guests, who led most of the way and kept a 58-59 lead with under 2 minutes to go. Hervelle nailed a go-ahead three-pointer, while Reyes grabbed a pair of key offensive rebounds that allowed Real Madrid to keep control of the game until the final buzzer.

Rakocevic buried a triple to get the hosts going, while Reyes scored twice around the paint to send Madrid ahead 8-2. Woodward woke up Montepaschi with a three-pointer, but Mous Sonko answered from the arc for Madrid and Venson Hamilton added a jumper. Madrid led 13-5 midway through the quarter when it's offense stalled and Montepaschi rode a wave of steals to a major run. Kaukenas got it started with a short shot off a loose ball. Stonerook and Woodward drove unmolested before Bullock interrupted with a jump shot. Woodward came back with a tip-in, then Stonerook buried a bomb from the top to give Montepaschi a 15-16 lead. The last play of the quarter saw Luigi Datome pass cross-court to Andrea Pecile, who drilled a triple to finish a 2-14 run with the visitors leading 15-19.

Kaukenas kept Siena in charge with a driving layup and a free throw which came with it, while Datome nailed a four-meter jumper which capped a 0-11 run and gave Montepaschi a 15-24 margin. Real Madrid went scoreless for almost 4 minutes until Hervelle nailed a short jumper which Stonerook matched with a reverse layup. It didn't last long, as Rakocevic and Hervelle combined for 3 quick triples to force a Montepaschi timeout at 26-28. Real Madrid now dominated in defense with a effective zone defense, while Rakocevic scored off a steal to tie the game, 28-28. Siena simply did not find options in offense, while Hervelle capped a 13-0 run with a layup which gave Madrid a 30-28 lead. Kaukenas broke 6 scoreless minutes for Siena with a three and Woodward nailed another one to make Siena regain the lead, 32-34, at halftime.

The scoring pace did not speed up early in the third quarter, as Felipe Reyes scored in the paint and Stonerook immediately answered with a dunk for the only points in the opening 3 minutes after the break. Boisa banked in a jumper and Bullock matched it with a driving layup for a 36-38 Real Madrid deficit with 24 minutes. Rakocevic followed a jumper with free throws to tie the game again, 40-40. Siena did not panic, as Chiacig made free throws whle Venson Hamilton missed an uncontested layup which allowed Kaukenas to score, while Pecile nailed a stop-and-pop jumper to force a Real Madrid timeout, 41-46. Montepaschi kept its excellent zone defense, while free throws by Kaukenas and Datome capped a 2-10 run for a 42-50 margin. Rakocevic beat the buzzer with a three which brought Real Madrid within 45-50 after 30 minutes.

Real Madrid started the fourth quarter with a red-hot Bullock, who nailed a three-pointer off a big block by Hamilton, to which Gelabale and Reyes added free throws for a 51-50 edge. The hosts forced a 24-second violation on Montepaschi, which allowed Bullock to nail anohter triple which capped a 9-0 run to a 54-50 Madrid lead. Vladimer Boisa made free throws for Siena but the guests were limited to those 2 points over more than 6 minutes. Even with that, Woodward followed a fastbreak basket with a reverse layup which gave Montepaschi a 55-56 edge with less than 3 minutes to go. Bullock made a free throw and Rakocevic fired in a short jumper, but Boisa nailed a critical three for a 58-59 Siena lead. Hervelle answered from downtown while Reyes became the game hero with back-to-back offensive rebounds. Reyes, Tomas and Bullock combined for 5 free throws to seal the outcome, 65-61, with 11.4 seconds to go, as Montepaschi ran out of time.

Head Coaches

MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Real Madrid
"This victory is great for us because we want to take distance from the teams that are down in the group as soon as possible so we can play the rest of the games with less pressure. Tonight we have beaten one of the best teams in Europe. A team that can pull a victory in Moscow deserves all the respect you can have. They are a very fast, very intelligent and skilled team. They know how to move the ball, how to be patient or when to be aggressive. They are a team that knows what to do and when to do it. It is very difficult to beat a team like that, and, even with the victory in our pocket, I think we have to learn some things from them. They know how to change their defense, when to get a fastbreak... I think we have seen very good basketball tonight in Madrid."
RECALCATI, CARLO
Montepaschi Siena
"It was a very tough game. Real Madrid is a team that forces you to be with your eyes very open throughout the whole game. They use a lot of tactics in their game; this puts you constantly in complicated situations. But, even if we have lost, I can say I am happy with my players because they were concentrated in defense and aggressive in offense. This has a lot of merit because we had not been playing very well the last games and some of our players were having some trouble, and even if it was not a very spectacular game, I think it was good basketball."

Players

BULLOCK, LOUIS
Real Madrid
"This was a very tough game against a very good team. Montepaschi has shown they can use a lot of different options in both ends of the court to take advantage. However, we could manage to come on top and beat them at the end. In Euroleague, winning the games at home is the most important thing, and we have done it so far. This way, we are a bit closer to our goal, which is to qualify for the Top 16."
GELABALE, MICKAEL
Real Madrid
"The most important thing was to get a victory, and we have done it. Siena is a very tough team that can surprise you at any moment. They changed their defense or their pace very well to adapt to the different situations that happened throughout the game. It is one of the best teams in our group, and tonight they have shown why. With this victory, we have put some distance between us and the teams that have a worse record. This is exactly what we wanted, because we have taken a very big step to qualify for the next round."
HAMILTON, JUSTIN
Montepaschi Siena
"We have not played a bad game tonight. Real Madrid is a very tough team and playing at their court is never easy. We could stop them for a while because our defense was working well, but maybe we did not take as much advantage as we should have when they were going through trouble and the game was always very even. At the end, they managed to come on top. The bottom line is they deserved this victory because they played better than we did."
