THE TAKE

It's do-or-die time for a pair of Group D sides when Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv hosts EB Pau-Orthez on Thursday at Nokia Arena. Maccabi (1-1) saw its 15-game home win streak in the Euroleague end when it hosted Tau Ceramica in their Top 16 opener. The Yellows can ill-afford another home loss and still hope to reach Quarterfinal Playoffs. Pau (0-2) is in a must-win situation, too, as it could have little left to play for with another defeat. Maccabi bounced back last week at Roma with only its second road win of the season as Jamie Arnold came off the bench for 17 points and 12 rebounds, earning himself MVP-of-the-Week honors. Arnold (8.4 ppg., 4.6 rpg.) and fellow big men Nikola Vujcic (16.4 ppg., 7.8rpg., 4.4 apg.), rookie Lior Eliyahu (11.1 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) and reserve Yaniv Green could be the keys to the battle against Pau. The visiting frontline is paced by Michael Wright (15.7 ppg., 5 rpg.), who actually served as Green's backup at Hapoel Tel Aviv just three years ago. Rookie Ian Mahinmi has been starting lately with forward Britton Johnsen (11.2 ppg.) and sometimes Ludovic Vaty coming off the bench. In the backcourt, Will Bynum (11.1 ppg.) has found new life in the off-guard spot alongside Goran Jeretin, with trusty Derrick Sharp (11.8 ppg., 57.1% 3FG) boosting the team as the sixth man. However they will be tested by a tough rotation of active Pau defenders, led by playmaker Aaron Miles (9.6 ppg., 3.8 apg.) and C.C. Harrison (9.5 ppg.), with Ricardo Greer (7.9 ppg., 5.8 rpg.), Melvin Sanders (10 ppg.) and Cedric Ferchaud at the wings. Maccabi will have a height advantage at most positions, including small forward, where Simas Jasaitas (10.3 ppg.) should be able to get off his shots without problems. Pau has shown it can play Maccabi's style, since its record is 4-1 when it scores more than 75 points. Nevertheless, the hosts will likely try to use the support of a sellout crowd to outrun Pau in this first meeting between these taams in more than six years. Sharp and Pau's Frederic Fauthoux are the only active players from that last game, and Maccabi leads the all-time series 3-1. The stakes are high, however, in Thursday's showdown, so expect a hard-fought game in Tel Aviv.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
“We're very encouraged by last week's win at Roma and we want to continue on the winning path. We know how strong Pau-Orthez is. They are the surprise team of the Euroleague this season. They had only a small chance to advance to the Top 16, but they did it. They are also the only team to beat CSKA this season. But with all due respect to their athleticism and their deep bench, we're coming to win.”
HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"Maccabi Tel Aviv is one of the best teams in Europe, with a great basketball tradition. Moreover, their arena is one of the most difficult places for a visiting team to get a good result. The challenge is enormous, but victory is the only way to keep our options for qualification. Defense and the control of the rebounds will be the key of the game. I hope that our experience in very difficult arenas in Istanbul, Kaunas and Thessaloniki will help us to control the rhythm and to play with intensity from the first minute."

GREEN, YANIV

"The win in Roma gave us a big push and put us in a better position. We needed to fix our first home loss in the game against Tau, and we showed we can do it. Now it's a totally new game, and in the Top16 every game and every basket counts. Pau didn't win so far in the Top16 so they'll come to play hard and fight for every ball, because it will be very tough for them to come back from 0-3. We need to keep playing our game, and show them not only we are better basketball players, but also we are bigger fighters. The big push from our fans always helps. I hope Pau will get a chance to feel why our fans are considered the best in Europe."
HARRISON, CLINT
Pau-Orthez
"It is not necesary to introduce anyone to Maccabi Tel Aviv if we take into account their presence at the top level for a long time. It is an honor to play such a game against a team with the support of a whole nation. The solution for us to consider doing something great will be based on our capacity to reproduce the second half we played against Tau during 40 minutes or more. The challenge to keep on dreaming in this competition is exciting. If we play with intensity and extreme concentration, nothing is impossible."
Nikola Vujcic - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv captain Derrick Sharp came to the rescue again with 8 points in the final 9 seconds to lead the Israeli champs to a 74-70 win over EB Pau-Orthez on Thursday night at Nokia Arena. The visitors led by 12 in the third quarter and seemed in control in the fourth. But after Michael Wright made it 57-63 midway through the final period, Sharp hit a three to begin a run of 9 unanswered points that put Maccabi on top for good. C.C. Harrison looked to get his team back within 1 with a minute to go, but a spectacular block from Will Bynum and 6-for-6 free-throw shooting by Sharp iced the win. The result sees Maccabi improve to 2-1 in Group D, before a showdown next week at Tau Ceramica. Pau fell to 0-3 and has all but slipped out of contention for a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Eliyahu led Maccabi with 16 points – all in the first half. Simas Jasaitas added 13, Nikola Vujcic posted 12 points and 11 rebounds and Sharp finished with 11. Britton Johnsen led Pau with 20 – all in the first half. Aaron Miles added 15, Harrison 13 and Ricardo Greer finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Maccabi won the opening tip and opened the scoring as Eliyahu cut through the paint for a thunderous slam. Pau went inside to Ian Mahinmi to get on the board, however the young big man's impact was to be short-lived as he quickly committed two fouls and found himself on the bench. The game pace picked up and at first led to poor shots and turnovers, but then a three-point display ensued as Goran Jeretin and Simas hit for the hosts and Aaron Miles drilled one for Pau. Vujcic missed a few chippies, allowing Johnsen's triple to give the visitors their first lead, 10-12. But Vujcic found his rhythm and answered with a pair of runners. Johnsen's second three was followed by Harrison's first to make it 16-18, but after saving an offensive rebound, Eliyahu converted a three-point playt. More lead changes were in store as Wright scored his first basket inside and Eliyahu answered from the line. The Maccabi rookie then put a spin-move on Johnsen to score his 13th point and end the period with Maccabi up 23-20.

Britton Johnsen - EB Pau-OrthezJohnsen started the second period with a turn-around jumper over Eliyahu and then turned an offensive rebound into a three-point play for a 23-25 Pau lead. Melvin Sanders added a jumper for his first points, but sloppy play on both sides saw the pace drop. Bynum ended a three-and-a-half minute Maccabi drought from the line and then Jamie Arnold scored inside. After Arnold tied the game at 29-29 from the line, Johnsen restored Pau's tiny lead from the charity stripe. An acrobatic Bynum drive was matched by Greer's offensive rebound and basket. Eliyahu's short jumper brought his team within 1, but Johnsen bettered him with a basket and foul. Johnsen reached 20 points with his third triple of the night before Jeretin's free throws ended the half with Pau on top 38-40.

Jeretin turned the ball over twice as the second half got underway, and Miles made Maccabi pay with a triple. Harrison completed a three-point play and Greer added 2 from the offensive glass as Pau reeled off 10 unanswered points for its biggest lead, 38-50. Jasaitas finally ended a four-minute scoring drought from downtown and Arnold immediately cut the gap to 7. After Pau coach Gordon Herbert took a timeout, Greer scored and a minute later Wright did the same to calm the visitors down. Arnold beat the shot-clock and Jasaitas scored inside to make it 47-54. Greer answered for Pau, but Jasaitas netted a triple a for a 50-56 scoreline after 30 minutes.

Jamie Arnold - Maccabi EliteVujcic went inside to start the fourth quarter with a basket for Maccabi, but Harrison answered in transition. Vujcic fed Jasaitas, but again it was Harrison for Pau, this time with a triple. Tal Burstein shot back with a triple, but Wright kept Pau ahead by 6 with an basket on the offensive glass. Sharp fired in a clutch three to cut the gap to 3 midway through the period and Bynum followed that with a penetration to make it 62-63. Pau used another timeout, but Harrison missed a wild three and after Bynum skied for the rebound, he cut to the basket and fed Vujcic to give Maccabi its first lead of the second half. Pau continued to struggle on the offensive end down the stretch. After Harrison was called for traveling, Vujcic scored over Wright to cap a 9-0 run with 1:30 left in the game. Harrison's foul-line jumper brought Pau within 1 with a minute to go. Sharp drove the paint for a hard basket, but missed the resulting free throw. Harrison looked to bring Pau within 1 with a layup with 20 seconds left, but Bynum flew in from the side for a spectacular block to deny the Pau player. Tel Aviv tried to run the clock down, but Pau fouled Sharp with 14.1 seconds remaining and the captain made both. Miles scored a three with 8.6 seconds left, but Sharp made his free throws, helping Maccabi ice the game to remain in the hunt for a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I'm not happy about the way we played. We did a great job in the last quarter, but that's not the basketball Maccabi should play. This isn't acceptable basketball. Not for me, not for the fans and not for the management of Maccabi Tel Aviv. We played much better in the past. I know sometimes we need to pass this period, but for us it's too much. We won and this is the only positive thing tonight. The problem was that the post-up game for Nikola didn't work, but instead of playing around it, we forced it. Never in my 22 years experience in coaching have I seen such a big difference in a team's performance between the practices and the games.”
HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"We came here to win but I was pleased with our effort. We worked hard. My players made a great effort. We ran out of gas the last 3-4 minutes. Our goal was to reach the quarterfinals, which means we need to win the last 3 games. With this effort tonight we're looking forward to that challenge. We wanted to keep the ball out of Vujcic's hands, because he can make others better. He's a great passer. Greer did a great job on him. Our trouble was we left Jasaitis twice open on the three-point line and he punished us and changed the game."

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite
"It was a tough game. Lately things have been going the hard way for us. They took a double-digit lead and we can't allow our opponents to do that, especially not at home. Nobody wants to play this way, but we need to know to win such games too."
MILES, AARON
Pau-Orthez
"I'm happy that we were close to Maccabi the whole game, but it's disappointing we lost the lead in the last quarter. Maccabi is still a strong team that is tough to beat here in Tel Aviv. I hope we'll beat them in the second round in France."
