Eurobasket 2009 qualifying: Italy avoids 0-3
|
A silver medalist at the Olympics just four years ago, Italy needed all its strength to hold onto an 88-80 home win against Finland in the 2009 EuroBasket qualifying round on Wednesday in Chieti, Italy. The victory saved Italy from a third loss in Group A and left its record at 1-2, while Finland fell to 0-2. Giussepe Poeta led the winners with 20 points, while Air Avellino guard Daniele Cinciarini had 15 and Armani Jeans Milano teammates Marco Mordente and Massimo Bulleri 10 each. Hanno Mottola had 20 points for Finland, which made a late run to get within 75-72 on Jukka Matinen's three-pointer. Meanwhile, at home in Belgrade, Serbia boosted its record to 2-0 when it thrashed visiting Hungary 94-60. Serbia was up 27-17 after a quarter and was content to nurse similar leads until pouring on the points in the final 10 minutes. Zoran Erceg of Olympiacos Pireaus led six Serbian scorers in double figures with 15 points. Uros Tripkovic followed with 13 points while his Partizan Igokea Belgrade teammate Milenko Tepic had 11. Group A is the only one of four whose games have begun. The rest start on September 3.
