Maccabi's Fischer breaks finger
|
The top Euroleague performer so far in 2008-09 is likely to miss the rest of the regular season. Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv earned a big win on the road against Air Avellino on Thursday but also suffered a big blow when center D'or Fischer broke a right hand finger during the game, Fischer will be out of action for several weeks, as stated in the official press release of the club on Sunday. Fischer continued to play after the injury, and even practiced a bit with the team after its return to Israel, but his finger became swollen. He was rushed to an x-ray to diagnose the seriousness of the injury, and that's when the fracture was found. In his Euroleague rookie season, the 2.11-meter big man has been one of the best players in the competition so far. After seven weeks, Fischer leads everyone in average index ranking with 21.14 per game. He is ranks seventh in both scoring, with 15 points per game, and two-point accuracy, 71.9%, with more than double the shots made than all but one player ahead of him. His 7 rebounds per game rank 11th best in the competition, too. In Avellino,Fischer had his first double-double of the season, 17 points and 10 rebounds, as Maccabi won 72-86 and came very close to securing a spot in the Top 16. Maccabi recently signed center Elton Brown, who hasn't played yet in the Euroleague, but will be expected to fill a big portion of Fischer's minutes. Esteban Batista, who was pushed back in the rotation since the arrival of coach Pini Gershon, could also enjoy some action time until the return of Fischer as well.
