Panathinaikos tabs Xavi Pascual as new bench boss
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens on Saturday night made official the arrival of former Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Xavi Pascual as the new head coach of the team on a three-year agreement. Pascual, 44, arrives days after Argyris Pedoulakis resigned earlier this week following a domestic league loss to archrival Olympiacos Piraeus. Pascual, 44, arrives from FC Barcelona Lassa, where he coached until the end of last season. Pascual led Barcelona to the 2010 EuroLeague title, along with several other domestic titles including four Spanish Leagues and three Spanish King's Cups. Pascual also won the Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year Award in 2009-10 and was chosen best coach in the Spanish League twice, in 2009 and 2011. Pascual has been dominant in what was one of the most competitive phases of the EuroLeague until this season's format change: the Top 16. From February 2010 until March 2014, he coached Barcelona to an incredible 37-1 record during that phase. He also had a 28-0 home record in the Top 16 between February 2008 and April 2014. Pascual has only been head coach of Barcelona and its fourth-division affiliate. He made his debut on the Barcelona bench in the 2005-06 season, after replacing Dusko Ivanovic, for whom Pascual had worked as an assistant coach.
