Unicaja Malaga added size and experience to its roster by signing center Giorgi Shermadini to a two-year deal on Thursday. Shermadini (2.17 meters, 28 years old) arrives from Morabanc Andorra, where he averaged 15.7 points on 63.5% two-point shooting and 7.6 rebounds in 35 Spanish League games last season. He was chosen to the All-Spanish League first team and earned monthly MVP honors in January, March and May, while ranking second in scoring, third in rebounds and second in performance index ranking (21.5 PIR per game) for the season. Shermadini led Andorra to both the Spanish Copa del Rey tournament and the Spanish League playoffs, though it lost in both competitions to EuroLeague powerhouse Real Madrid by a narrow margin.
Shermadini started his career with Maccabi Tbilisi of his native Georgia. He has also played for Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus of Greece, Union Olimpija Ljubljana of Slovenia, Pallacanestro Cantu of Italy, Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel and CAI Zaragoza of Spain. He helped Panathinaikos win the Triple Crown - Greek League, Greek Cup and EuroLeague titles – in 2009, though he played a limited role. Shermadini won a second EuroLeague crown with Olympiacos in 2013. He also won the Greek League and Cup double with Panathinaikos in 2010 and lifted the Slovenian Cup with Olimpija in 2011. Shermadini is also a regular with the Georgian national team.
