Panathinaikos brings back Xanthopoulos
Panathinaikos Athens kept building its roster for the upcoming Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by inking playmaker Vassilis Xanthopoulos to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Xanthopoulos (1.88 meters, 28 years old) arrives from Panionios Athens, to which he helped to finish third in the Greek League last seson, averaging 6.8 points, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals in 34 games. He played for Panathinaikos in 2004-05 and 2006-07, seeing limited playing time. Xanthopoulos won Greek League and Greek Cup titles titles with the Greens in 2005 and 2007, as well as lifting the Euroleague trophy in 2007. He has also played for Near East and Panellinios, to which he helped to make it to the Eurocup Finals in 2010. Xanthopoulos has been a member of the Greek national team. He helped Greece to win bronze medals at the 2002 U18 European Championships and the 2003 U18 World Championships. "I am very happy to be back with Panathinaikos. This is a new beginning and the club esentially created a new team with new players and coaches," Xanthopoulos said. "We know what Panathinaikos means and that its goal is to compete at the highest level and continue to win titles."
