Zalgiris nabs Thompson to replace injured Kavaliauskas

Zalgiris Kaunas announced on Sunday that it signed big man Deon Thompson to fortify the frontcourt after losing center Antanas Kavaliauskas to injury. Thompson (2.03 meters, 30 years old) arrives from Spanish side San Pablo Burgos, where he has spent the past season and a half. He averaged 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in 14 Spanish League game this season. Zalgiris will be Thompson's sixth EuroLeague club after previous stints with Union Olimpija Ljubljana, ALBA Berlin, FC Bayern Munich, Galatasaray Istanbul and Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. He has played a total of 90 EuroLeague games over five seasons and averaged 8.0 points and 3.9 rebounds. During his professional career, Thompson has also played for Ikaros Kallitheas of Greece and Liaoning Jiebao Hunters in China. He helped Olimpija win the Slovenian Cup in 2012, lifted the German Cup with ALBA in 2013 and a year later helped Bayern win its first German League title in almost half a century.

Kavaliauskas is expected to miss at least five weeks after undergoing abdominal surgery, which is planned for Tuesday. Kavaliauskas has posted 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds over 12 games in a reserve role for Zalgiris this season.
