Turkish League Finals, Game 2: June 6, 2009

Fenerbahce Ulker took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Turkish League finals by edging archrivals Efes Pilsen 67-70 in Game 2 on Saturday. Damir Mrsic became the man of the game by hitting the game-winning three-pointer with 2 seconds remaining. Willie Solomon led the winners with 14 points. Semih Erden added 12 while Omer Onan had 11 for FB Ulker. Preston Shumpert led Efes with 14 points. Bootsy Thornton and Kaya Peker each added 11 for the hosts. Efes led for the best part of the game and a 51-45 margin early in the fourth quarter. Emir Preldzic, Marques Green and Solomon struck from downtown in an 1-11 run that gave Fener a 52-56 edge. Kerem Tunceri and Mario Kasun allowed Efes to regain the lead, as Solomon had free throws at 67-66 with 7 seconds to go. He missed his second attempt but Mirsad Turkcan grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Mrsic for a wild triple. Fener hosts Games 3 and 4 at Abdi Ipecki next week.
A quick basket by Thornton and a three-point play by Smith gave Efes an early 5-0 lead. Gasper Vidmar and Turkcan stepped up for FB Ulker but Efes had found a go-to guy in Peker, who allowed the hosts to keep a 12-7 edge. Semih Erden and Solomon brought Fener within 14-11 after 10 minutes. Shumpert helped Efes to make it a seven-point game, 18-11, early in the second quarter. Erden and Omer Asik tried to change things for FB Ulker but free throws by Kasun kept Efes way ahead, 27-19. Solomon took over late in the first half while a triple by Onan got Fener as close as 32-27 at the break. Shumpert and Michalis Kakiouzis took over early in the third quarter but Onan struck twice from downtown to bring Fener back to life, 41-38. Efes improved its defense while Smith and Thornton gave the hosts a 47-40 margin. Erden made free throws while Mrsic buried a big triple for a 49-45 Fener deficit after 30 minutes. Preldzic, Green and Solomon struck from downtown in an 1-11 run that gave Fener a 52-56 edge with 6 minutes to go. Tunceri and Shumpert rescued Efes while Kasun gave the hosts a 66-64 edge with a minute remaining. Free throws by Mrsic made it a one-point game, 67-66, with 15 seconds to go. Solomon drew a foul but missed his second free throw attempt at 67-67. Turkcan grabbed the offensive board and fed Mrsic for the game-winning triple, allowing Fener to get even closer to the Turkish League title.
