|
Efes Pilsen recovered from a 0-2 deficit in the best-of-seven Turkish League finals by beating Fenerbahce Ulker 68-77 in Game 4 at Abdi Ipecki on Thursday. Series is now tied at 2-2 and Efes hosts Game 5 on Saturday, but all four wins so far were scored by road teams. Preston Shumpert paced the winners with 20 points, 13 of them in the fourth quarter right when it mattered. Bootsy Thornton added 15, Kerem Gonlum had 11 and 9 rebounds while Charles Smith got 10 points for Efes. Omer Asik led FB Ulker with 14 points on 6-for-6 two-pointers. Willie Solomon added 12, Damir Mrsic had 11 while Omer Onan got 10 for the hosts. A 1-15 run that Gonlum capped with free throws gave Efes its biggest lead, 10-24, late in the first quarter. FB Ulker rallied in the second quarter and even when it did not manage to tie the game again, the hosts got within 56-57 with under 6 minutes to go. Shumpert scored again and soon added back-to-back triples to break the game open, 58-67, with 2 minutes to go, enough for Efes to tie the series.
Mario Kasun got Efes going with a put-back dunk but Gasper Vidmar and Mirsad Turkcan soon gave Fener its first lead, 6-5. Thornton rescued Efes with a five-meter jumper and a fast break dunk. An off-balance shot by Smith ignited a 1-15 run that Gonlum capped with free throws, good for a 10-24 Efes margin late in the first quarter. Semih Erden got the crowd involved with a wild three-point play that highlighted a 8-0 Fener run. Shumpert and Ender Arslan answered from downtown to make Efes restore a double-digit lead, 22-32. Solomon stepped up for FB Ulker while a triple by Mrsic got his team within 30-33. Shumpert and a three-pointer by Gonlum kept Efes ahead, 35-40, at halftime. Thornton and Smith kept pacing Efes after the break while Kerem Tunceri struck from downtown to make it an eight-point game, 39-47. Asik dunked off a steal, igniting a 6-0 run that got Fener within 45-47. Arslan and Thornton gave Efes some fresh air but an off-balance triple by Turkcan kept Fener within 48-52 after 30 minutes. Shumpert shined early in the fourth quarter but Solomon and an outstanding Onan kept Fener alive, 56-57, with under 6 minutes remaining. Shumpert - who else? - kept Efes ahead with a corner triple while Peker dunked it for a 58-64 score with 2:42 to go. Shumpert sealed the outcome with another triple, 58-67, as Fener never recovered.
