Turkish League finals, Game 5: June 14, 2009
Charles Smith - Efes Pilsen (efesbasket.org)Efes Pilsen gained the upper hand in the Turkish League finals on Sunday with a 74-68 victory over defending champ Fenerbahce Ulker. Efes recorded the first home win for either team in the series and took a 3-2 lead with Game 6 at Fenerbahce looming on Wednesday. Game 5 was another exciting contest for 39-plus minutes, but will be more remembered for an unusual ending. With the score tied at 68-68 and 13 seconds to play, Efes was set to inbound the ball when Fener's Omer Onan was whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul. Head coach Bogdan Tanjevic was complained loudly and received a technical foul and Mirsad Turkcan and Willie Solomon did too. Charles Smith sank 4 free throws to give the hosts total control, while the Fenerbahce bench continued to howl at the referees and the visiting fans heckled too. The game was stopped for more than 15 minutes before order was restored, after which Smith shot 4 more free throws and sank 2 to set the final margin. Kaya Peker led all Efes scorers with 16 points and 6 rebounds, Shumpert scored 14 and Smith – despite shooting 1 for 7 from the field – and Sinan Guler netted 11 each. Solomon paced Fener with 14 points and Onan added 10.
