British League, Season 2009-10
The British Basketball League has two different winners throughout the season. Thirteen teams will battle against each other through the regular season after which eight teams make it to the playoffs, however it is the regular season winner that is considered the British League winner. The top 8 teams are involved in a final eight, fighting for a different trophy and one last honor. Two more competitions take place throughout the season: the BBL Trophy, in which teams are divided in groups and the top team in each group advances to a final four, and the BBL Cup, a straight knock-out competition through four rounds. The Newcastle Eagles are the favorite to lift the BBL Championship trophy at the end of the season. Newcastle has won the title four times in the last five years. It also won the playoffs and the BBL Trophy last season to round out a near-perfect season. Fabulous Flournoy, Darius Defoe and Lynard Stewart are back on the team to lead Newcastle in the 2009-10 season. The Everton Tigers, Leicester Raiders and Glasgow Rocks are the top candidates to dethrone the Eagles. The Rocks feature Jessie Sapp and Rob Yanders as their main stars, while the Raiders rely on Brad Wierzbicki and Jason Johnson to lead the team this season. Meanwhile, the Tigers expect a breakout season from Olu Babalola. You can always find an intense battle in the British League, where practically any team can beat anyone, anywhere.
