Regal FCB took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by edging Caja Laboral 79-86 in Vitoria on Saturday. Ricky Rubio led the winners with 17 points on 5-of-5 three-pointers. Juan Carlos Navarro added 15 while Stanko Barac led Laboral with 19 points. Real Madrid held off a wild rally to edge Gran Canaria 2014 74-73 in the Spanish capital on Saturday. Ante Tomic led the winners with 19 points. Jaycee Carroll led Gran Canaria with 30 points on 6-of-8 three-pointers. Unicaja improved to 13-13 by overwhelming Xacobeo Blu:sens 89-58 in Malaga on Saturday behind 19 points from Joel Freeland. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket grabbed its sixth consecutive win by rallying to edge Cajasol 63-60 at home on Saturday. Janis Blums had 10 of his 15 points in a 13-2 run that put Bilbao ahead for good in crunch time. DKV Joventut moved up to 13-13 by topping Suzuki Manresa 78-84 on the road on Sunday. Spanish League, Season 2009-10
The Spanish League remains as one of the most competitive around the continent, a league where any team can lose a game anywhere. Just like in the last two years, Regal FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are the top candidates to lift the trophy, with Unicaja and Caja Laboral ready to challenge. Defending champion Barcelona kept most of its stars from last season including Euroleague MVP Juan Carlos Navarro, Jaka Lakovic, Fran Vazquez and Gianluca Basile while adding Boni Ndong, Pete Mickeal, Erazem Lorbek and Ricky Rubio, among others. Madrid inked legendary coach Ettore Messina and landed Travis Hansen, Rimantas Kaukenas, Novica Velickovic and Darjus Lavrinovic. Caja Laboral underwent severe roster changes, but remains competitive with Brad Oleson, Carl English, Marcelo Huertas and Lior Eliyahu ready to help Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic. Unicaja also renovated its roster with Giorgos Printezis, Joel Freeland and Taquan Dean, while keeping Carlos Jimenez, Berni Rodriguez and Omar Cook. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket is a growing club with aspirations to reach high with Alex Mumbru, Marko Banic, Chris Warren and Ronnie Seibutis. DKV Joventut starts a new era with Uros Tripkovic, Clay Tucker and Antonio Bueno, while Valencia Basket hopes that Rawle Marshall, Serhiy Lishchuk, Matt Nielsen and Kosta Perovic lead the team back to the playoffs. Gran Canaria 2014 will be competitive as usual, with Jaycee Carroll and Will McDonald as its own superstars. Expect the Spanish League to provide six months of excitement in which anything can happen.
