Iurbentia Bilbao star: Javier Salgado
|
There are few better feelings for an athlete than to find success in his hometown. Javier Salgado of iurbentia Bilbao Basket certainly knows that feeling by now. Salgado has played for Bilbao Basket since 2001, a season after the club was founded, and along with head coach Txus Vidorreta, has been a fixture of the team's inspired rise from the Spanish third division to the Eurocup Final Eight. Salgado has participated in each step of that progression, from the third- and second-division titles that landed Bilbao in the Spanish League by 2004, to last season's impressive runs to the Spanish Cup semifinals and Spanish League playoffs. This season, Eurocup fans got to see why his creativity, clutch shooting, free-throw accuracy and commitment make Salgado a fan favorite in Bilbao. Far from being intimidated in his European debut, Salgado came off the bench to lead an early-season comeback victory on the road, a major reason that Bilbao eventually finished the regular season undefeated. While the team went on to match the Eurocup's best overall record prior to the Final Eight, Salgado led Bilbao in assists and steals while scoring the third-most points. Now, Salgado plans to return from Turin with Bilbao's first trophy, plus a ticket to next season's Euroleague.
