Club info

Brose Bamberg used last season to establish itself as competitive force that is ready and able to battle with all teams at home and away. From the start of the season, Bamberg was on the wrong end of a series of very close games. In eight of the season’s first 10 rounds, Coach Andrea Trinchieri’s men played games that were decided by 4 points or fewer, but won only two of those contests, including last-second home losses against Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens and CSKA Moscow. Despite being down, Bamberg showed resilience and strength to bounce back. It convincingly beat the likes of Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv and Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul on the road and Anadolu Efes Istanbul and Olympiacos Piraeus at home. Forward Nicolo Melli produced career performances and was chosen as the EuroLeague MVP for December, and by the end of the calendar year, Bamberg was back in playoff contention. However, more close losses, including another defeat on its home floor at the buzzer, this time to Real Madrid, pushed Bamberg down in the standings. Late season road wins at Efes and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan proved the team had no intentions of going down without a fight and it finished the regular season with 10-20 record and determined to get back to the EuroLeague again. That goal was met when Bamberg wrapped up the German championship for the seventh time in eight years with Fabien Causeur claiming MVP honors in a three-game sweep of ratiopharm Ulm in the finals.

History

Reigning German champion Brose Bamberg returns to the Euroleague for the third consecutive season and ninth time in its history. The team is coming off a season in which it kept its EuroLeague playoff hopes alive until late in the season, but came up short. Bamberg then stormed through the German League playoffs, where it dominated Telekom Baskets Bonn, FC Bayern Munich and EWE Basket Oldenburg, winning its last nine games en route to the title. Bamberg also lifted the German Cup last season to make it a German double for the first time in five seasons. Founded in 1955, Bamberg qualified for the German first division in 1971. Renamed TTL Bamberg in 1988, it reached the German Cup final in 1990 and won that title in 1992. The club started playing European competitions in 1973 and played its first group stage in the 1996-97 Korac Cup. The new millennium marked a step forward for Bamberg, which moved into Jako Arena and appointed Dirk Bauermann as head coach. It soon became a perennial contender at home and reached the 2003 and 2004 German League finals. All its hard work paid off when Bamberg beat Frankfurt Skyliners to lift the 2005 German League trophy. A sponsorship change made the club Brose Baskets and it became the first German team to reach the EuroLeague Top 16, in the 2005-06 season. Bamberg won its second German League title in 2007. In the 2009-10 season, Bamberg reached the EuroCup Last 16 and won the first of three consecutive German League and Cup doubles as it became the team to beat in the country and competed in the EuroLeague every season. Players like Casey Jacobsen, Anton Gavel, Tibor Pleiss and Karsten Tadda helped Bamberg collect one domestic title after another. Bamberg also returned to the Top 16 in the 2012-13 season, when it claimed its fourth consecutive German League crown. The 2013-14 season was a rare, title-free campaign, but Bamberg was one win away from reaching the EuroLeague Top 16 and the EuroCup elimination rounds. Bamberg bounced back in style by winning the 2014-15 German League regular season and going all the way in the playoffs. Bamberg also reached the German Cup final and the EuroCup elimination rounds, where it lost to Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar in the eighthfinals. 2015-16 marked the club’s best EuroLeague appearance, when only a tiebreaker prevented Bamberg from advancing to the EuroLeague playoffs and it remained dominant at home by again winning the German League title. After another competitive EuroLeague campaign and a pair of domestic trophies, Bamberg and its great fans now look toward the 2017-18 EuroLeague with great ambitions.
