Club info
Barons/LMT Riga joins the 2008-09 Eurocup as proud champion of the Latvian League and an integral contributor to basketball in a country whose roots in the sport run deep. The club, originally called "Princips," finished third in the Latvian League's debut season in 1992. Moderate success followed with a third-place finish in 1994 and fourth-place finishes in 1995, 1996 and 1998. Following a quiet period, the club's new beginning came in 2001, when it adopted the Barons name. Slowly, but surely, Barons rebuilt and again wrapped up third place in the Latvian League in 2004. In each of the next two seasons, the club reached the Latvian finals only to lose to perennial champion Ventspils. The 2005-06 season marked a breakthrough, however, as Barons played in its first European competition, the FIBA EuroCup. By last season, the club seemed to have learned quickly from that experience, putting together a well-balanced roster with Armands Skele and Giedras Gustas on the perimeter, Demetrius Alexander and Joao Paulo Batista inside. With head coach Karlis Muiznieks pulling the strings from the bench, Barons produced its best season ever, winning the club's first two titles and reaching the Baltic League Final Four. Gustas was named MVP as Barons edged Dexia Mons-Hainaut 63-62 for the FIBA EuroCup crown in April. Skele earned MVP honors in May as Barons beat Riga arch-rival ASK by 4-1 in the playoff finals to win its first Latvian League championship. Now, with that duo of team leaders - Gustas and Skele - back to run the show, Barons knows it is in good hands heading into 2008-09. Add extra size and rebounding from Kaspars Berzins, solid bench help from Martins Kravcenko and Raimonds Vaikulis, plus a new go-to star in small forward Adrain Henning, the top scorer in the FIBA EuroCup last season, and Barons/LMT will be as ready as any team when the Eurocup regular season gets underway in November.
