Germani Brescia, preparing to play a third straight season in the 7DAYS EuroCup, continues to establish its name in Europe after taking strong steps forward in 2019-20. Brescia started its 2019-20 EuroCup campaign strong with a home victory – powered by the quartet of Awudu Abass, Kenneth Horton, DeAndre Lansdowne and Luca Vitali – over UNICS Kazan in Group C. A loss at Joventut Badalona was followed by the Italians winning at home against Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana. Brescia dropped its next home game against Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul but then defeated Nanterre 92 for its first road win of the season. In its final four games of the regular season, Brescia picked up home victories over Joventut and Nanterre and a road triumph against Darussafaka to reach the Top 16, a club first, with a 6-4 record. In the next stage, Brescia managed home victories over Promitheas Patras and EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the first three rounds but dropped its final three contests and failed to reach the quarterfinals with 2-4 mark. Domestically, Brescia reached the Italian Cup as one of the top eight teams but was bounced in the first round. The team did play well in the Italian League, amassing a 14-7 record for third place in the standings before the COVID-19 global pandemic ended the Italian League abruptly. Included in the season were two wins against AX Armani Exchange Milan and one against fellow EuroCup side Dolomiti Energia Trento. Brescia is back to the EuroCup again and will be looking to take more steps forward.

History

One of the youngest clubs in the competition this season, Germani Brescia was founded in 2009. In 2020-21, it will be competing in its 12th season overall and third in the 7DAYS EuroCup. With a population of 200,000, Brescia is the second-largest city in the Lombardy region, behind Milan, but had been without professional basketball for some 13 years after Basket Brescia folded. As such, local fans were ready to embrace the new club when it was born. Brescia acquired the rights from Cremona to begin competing in the Italian third division, needing just two years to master it. When Brescia bested Trapani in the 2011 playoff finals, it earned a ticket to the second division. There, Brescia continued climbing the ladder, finishing sixth in its first season, fourth in 2013, eighth the next year and second in 2015-16 season with a 21-9 record. Brescia had to work hard in the playoffs, with all four series going the distance, but ultimately eliminated Trapani, Tortona, Scafati and, finally, Fortitudo Bologna to become the 2016-17 second-division champions and clinch a spot in the Italian League, where the immediate goal was to avoid the relegation zone. With league-leading scorer Marcus Landry and the league's top assist man Luca Vitali taking charge, Brescia finished 10th and reached the Italian Cup semifinals. In the 2017-18 season, Brescia reached new heights as it occupied first place for much of the regular season, won a playoffs series, and, in between, advanced to the Italian Cup final. After knocking off Virtus Bologna and Cantu, Brescia fought hard in that final, but in a thriller that went to the wire, Turin won 69-67 on Sasha Vujacic's game-winning shot. In the Italian League playoffs, Brescia swept Varese in the quarterfinals before taking Game 1 of the semifinals 82-85 over AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan on the road. Milan rebounded to win the next three games, but there was no taking away from a historic campaign for Brescia. The club made its European debut in 2018-19 and picked up three wins in the EuroCup regular season. In 2019-20, the northern Italians took another step forward, reaching the EuroCup Top 16 with a 6-4 record in the regular season. Brescia also won two games in the Top 16. After years of a steady climb both domestically and in Europe, Brescia will be poised to show even more in 2020-21.
