Club info
VEF Riga’s run of three straight Latvian League crowns came to an end last season, but the club is eager to bounce right back and, through its third appearance in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, advance to its first ever Euroleague regular season. VEF reached the Latvian League finals, but lost to rival BK Ventspils. VEF did not get past the regular season in either the Eurocup or VTB United League too, all which further motivates the club for big things in 2014-15. Founded in 1958, VEF has featured some of the best players in Latvian history - Valdis Valters, Igor and Raimons Miglieniks, Gundars Vetra, Janis Krumins, Cezars Ozere and Juris Kalnins. VEF finished third in the 1960 Soviet League, and with the likes of Krumins, Ozere and Kalnins, finished third again in 1966. After suffering through some quiet years, Valters led VEF back to a spot in the Soviet League in 1978, where the club won fifth place in 1985 and third in 1991. VEF took part in the 1991 Korac Cup and the 1992 Saporta Cup qualifying rounds, but soon after ceased to exist. VEF Riga was re-founded in 2007 with Valters as the head coach and made it to the Latvian League semifinals and the Baltic League second-division title game in both 2008 and 2009. In the 2009-10 campaign, VEF reached the Baltic League quarterfinals, and its first ever Latvian League finals. The following season VEF enjoyed its Eurocup debut, reached the Baltic League title game and beat Ventspils for the club's first Latvian League title. More accomplishments were to come: In addition to two more Latvian League titles, VEF made its Euroleague Qualifying Rounds debut in 2011, narrowly missed the Eurocup playoffs in 2012-13, and advanced to the VTB quarterfinals the same year. Now, VEF Riga is ready to get back into contention for historic results, as it attempts to reach the Euroleague for the very first time.
