Promitheas shines with road win in debut

Promitheas Patras showed it means business in the 7DAYS EuroCup, celebrating its debut in the competition with a convincing 55-88 road victory over Maccabi Rishon LeZion. Chris Babb paced five Promitheas scorers in double figures with 19 points in the Group A game. Langston Hall had 12 points and 5 assists, Oleksandr Lypovvy chipped in 11 points and 6 assists and Leonidas Kaselakis and Georgios Bogris both had 10 points off the bench. Devon Saddler, Jordan Swing and Adam Ariel led the Rishon attack with 9 points each and Johnathan Williams had 4 points and 12 rebounds.

Promitheas raced ahead 0-11 with Lypovvy scoring 5 points. The hosts needed nearly 5 minutes to finally score on Swing’s three-pointer. A Babb triple increased the gap to 3-16. Saddler and Swing hit threes for Rishon, but Lypovvy tallied 11 first-quarter points and the guests led 13-29 after 10 minutes. The visitors increased the cushion to 20 points and it was 22-41 when Alex Hamilton sparked a 9-1 surge to cut the gap to 11. Kaselakis answered with 7 points in a 2-10 run to make it 33-52 going into the break. Rishon lacked energy in the third quarter and Promitheas continued the charge with a 3-11 run in the early stages of the second half for a 38-63 advantage. The margin was 44-71 after 30 minutes. The hosts could not mount any comeback as Promitheas did not let up defensively and Robert Lowery came off the bench for 5 points for the runaway win.

Pivotal performer

Chris Babb tallied 19 points on 8 field goal attempts while connecting on all 7 of his free throws. He also picked up 6 rebounds and 2 steals to go with 5 fouls drawn for a performance index rating of 29.

Next games

>Rishon will head on the road for the next game in the group and take on Segafredo Virtus Bologna on October 9. Promitheas looks to make it two for two with its first home game in the competition against AS Moncao on the same night.

Head Coaches

GOODES, GUY
Maccabi Rishon LeZion
"For us, it's a huge knockout first game. I think we tried and we thought that we could do much much better. We came with the right energy. After 5 minutes they were up by 11. Basically, Promitheas was taking over defensively and offensively. We tried all the cards we had in our pocket but nothing helped. We need to congratulate them on a great game and on the other hand, we need to learn how to be physically and mentally ready for the EuroCup level that is a really high level."
GIATRAS, MAKIS
Promitheas Patras
We didn’t expect anything. We just came concentrated to play this game. We made a lot of shots from the perimeter and we won the game. We're going to go game by game. This is our first year in the EuroCup. Our goal is to make it to the [next] round."

Players

BLAYZER, OZ
Maccabi Rishon LeZion
"Today was a tough lesson for us. We didn’t expect the game to go that way, but we had a strong wake-up call. Now we need to stay together, keep working hard and we will grow out of this and get better."
KASELAKIS, LEONIDAS
Promitheas Patras
"We didn't expect for sure that we are going to have a big margin. Maccabi Rishon has a good team, but they didn't show it tonight. I think we need to keep our performance. We were ready for everything, first of all, mentally. It's just the beginning. We will have to stay focused now for the next game. "
BABB, CHRIS
Promitheas Patras
"We got it rolling. It’s good to get back out here and play games. We had a long preseason. I didn't have any opportunities last season, so it's good to finally be back out and play a game. We just have to compete. We have a good team. We just need to execute like we did tonight every game we have. "
