Benetton Fribourg earned its first victory at the Citta di Roma junior tournament by 60-53 victory over Montepaschi Siena on Monday evening in Rome, Italy to finish with a 1-2 record in Group A. Fribourg took an early lead then used an 21-2 second-half run to decide the game. Stefan Petkovic once more played a key role with 20 points and Milos Bozovic added 15 for the winning side. Montepaschi saw 10 points each from Diego Monaldi and Nunzio Sabbatino. Fribourg's victory left it tied with Stella Azzurra and Montepaschi at 1-2 each and 1-1 each against the other. Point differences between them allowed Stella Azzurra to finish second, so it will play for third place in the tournament consolation game on Tuesday. Montepaschi ended in third place in Group A and so will play the fifth-game classification game. Fribourg finished fourth in Group A so will play for seventh place in the tournament on Tuesday. Zalgiris Kaunas finish the group on top with a clean 3-0 record and will play the tournament title game tomorrow against Benetton Treviso. The winner will take the first of four qualifying tournament tickets to the Nike International Junior Tournament to be held in Paris, France during the 2010 Euroleague Final Four.

Fribourg attacked from the tipoff as Bozovic and Petkovic led a 10-0 run for an early 18-6 lead. Monaldi didn't post his first points until the second quarter, but helped spark a run to bring Montepaschi within a point at the break, 27-26. Sabbatino and Molandi were in charge of a Montepaschi sprint out of the locker rooms as Fribourg scored no more than 2 points in the first 6 minutes of the second half, falling behind, 29-39. Yet, that was the last that Siena was heard from. Fribourg limited Montepaschi to 2 points in the next 9 minutes, as Petkovic, Brian Savoy and Bozovic filled a 21-2 run to zoom ahead 54-44. Montepaschi gave one last effort and cut the difference to 3 points, but didn't move closer than that.
