Lewis sparkles to lead Ulm to victory in opener

Trey Lewis and Toure Murry combined for 12 points during an 18-0 fourth quarter-run that saw ratiopharm Ulm come from behind for an 83-73 victory over Tofas Bursa in the 7DAYS EuroCup season opener at ratiopharm Arena on Tuesday. Ulm kept Tofas scoreless for more than six minutes to take the victory and start the Group D campaign at 1-0. Lewis finished with 26 points in his EuroCup debut, Da’Sean Butler scored 13, Ryan Thompson 11 and Isaac Fotu had 10 for the short-handed hosts. Ulm was without Per Guenther, who became a father earlier in the day, and injured big man Tim Ohlbrecht. Kenny Kadji set the tone early for Tofas with 12 first-quarter points and finished with 22. Former Ulm star Raymar Morgan netted 16 points, Yigit Arslan added 12 and Baris Ermis dished 10 assists in defeat.

Big men Luke Harangody and Fotu stood out early for the hosts as Ulm jumped out to an 11-6 start. Tofas rallied back with a 0-6 spurt capped by a Kadji slam to even the score at 14-14. Kadji stayed hot with a go-ahead three, a floater and another three, but Butler’s layup on the buzzer kept the hosts within 21-22 after 10 minutes. Both teams scored with ease at the start of the second quarter, which featured five lead changes in the first three minutes. Tofas looked to pull away at one point, but Ulm kept it close and trailed only 42-44 at the break. Thompson scored for Ulm to tie the game at 50-50, but Josh Owens stepped up to push Tofas ahead and the difference surged to 51-60 on a Sammy Mejia triple. And the visitors held a 55-62 advantage through three quarters. Lewis connected twice from downtown early in the fourth quarter and then added a free throw to bring Ulm within 2. And Murry’s fast break layup evened the game. Murry and Lewis each added layups in what became an 18-0 Ulm charge that made it 78-66. The Ulm defense kept Tofas scoreless for more than six minutes as the locals started to celebrate a season-opening win.

"First of all I want to thank the organization of Ulm for the great hospitality. We will show them the same thing. We had a great effort in the first half and also in the third quarter. But after that we played a terrible fourth quarter, defensively and offensively. Ulm played more aggressive; we gave up in some parts of the game. For our team it’s the first time playing European games and it’s not easy to play the Turkish league and the EuroCup at the same time. We have to work on our mistakes to get more experienced."
