Baskonia gets team win in Gran Canaria
KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz recorded its third consecutive win by downing Herbalife Gran Canaria 71-84 on the road on Tuesday. Baskonia improved to 6-7 to stay in a pack of teams challenging to get into the upper half of the standings. Gran Canaria dropped to 5-8 to fall back to 12th place. Matt Janning and Shavon Shields led the winners with 16 points apiece. Jayson Granger got 15, Luca Vildoza added 13 while Ilimane Diop had 10 for Baskonia. Kim Tillie led Gran Canaria with 11 points.
Xavi Rabaseda got Gran Canaria going with back-to-back layups and Niko Radicevic added free throws for a 6-2 lead. Vildoza stepped up for Baskonia but Anzejs Pasecniks and D.J. Strawberry kept the hosts ahead, 11-7. Janning followed free throws with a triple to keep Baskonia within 13-12. Pasecniks and Radicevic rescued Gran Canaria and another triple by Strawberry made Baskonia call timeout at 21-14. Granger and Shields brought Baskonia a bit closer, 27-22, after 10 minutes. Granger struck from downtown early in the second quarter and beat the shot-clock buzzer with a step-back jumper for a 27-27 tie. Eulis Baez answered from downtown for Gran Canaria, but a layup by Toko Shengelia and an alley-oop slam by Diop gave Baskonia its first lead, 30-31. Diop and Shengelia kept pacing Baskonia, forcing the hosts to call timeout at 31-36. Diop scored down low and a three-pointer by Vildoza sent Baskonia to a 35-41 lead at halftime. Rabaseda scored in penetration after the break and Baez added 5 quick points but Janning struck twice from downtown for a 42-47 Baskonia edge. Vildoza and a red-hot Janning insisted from beyond the arc, helping the guests to their first double-digit lead, 46-56. Shields took over with consecutive back-door layups and added a corner triple to break the game open, 48-63. Oriol Pauli stepped up with a layup for the hosts and Albert Oliver added a triple for a 53-68 scoreboard after 30 minutes. Shields and Shengelia made free throws early in the fourth quarter while Pauli and Tillie kept the hosts within 58-72. Nothing really changed in the final 6 minutes, as Baskonia used longer possessions to milk the clock and cruised to a well-deserved win.
Pivotal performer
Shields came off the bench and gave Baskonia the spark that it needed, finishing the game with 16 points, 3 rebounds and a PIR of 16 after having scored just 16 points in his last four games combined.
Game-changing moment
Janning took over after the break, hitting 3 consecutive three-pointers. Shields soon added 7 quick points, as Baskonia got a 48-63 margin and kept full control of the game from that moment.
Stellar stat
Baskonia outrebounded Gran Canaria by 36-25, pulling down 14 offensive boards. Six of those came from Vincent Poirier, who finished with 12 rebounds for the second consecutive game.
Did you notice?
Baskonia had allowed 88.6 points in road games before this one, but limited Gran Canaria to just 71. It was a new season-low in scoring for Gran Canaria.
