Baskonia gets team win in Gran Canaria

KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz recorded its third consecutive win by downing Herbalife Gran Canaria 71-84 on the road on Tuesday. Baskonia improved to 6-7 to stay in a pack of teams challenging to get into the upper half of the standings. Gran Canaria dropped to 5-8 to fall back to 12th place. Matt Janning and Shavon Shields led the winners with 16 points apiece. Jayson Granger got 15, Luca Vildoza added 13 while Ilimane Diop had 10 for Baskonia. Kim Tillie led Gran Canaria with 11 points.

Xavi Rabaseda got Gran Canaria going with back-to-back layups and Niko Radicevic added free throws for a 6-2 lead. Vildoza stepped up for Baskonia but Anzejs Pasecniks and D.J. Strawberry kept the hosts ahead, 11-7. Janning followed free throws with a triple to keep Baskonia within 13-12. Pasecniks and Radicevic rescued Gran Canaria and another triple by Strawberry made Baskonia call timeout at 21-14. Granger and Shields brought Baskonia a bit closer, 27-22, after 10 minutes. Granger struck from downtown early in the second quarter and beat the shot-clock buzzer with a step-back jumper for a 27-27 tie. Eulis Baez answered from downtown for Gran Canaria, but a layup by Toko Shengelia and an alley-oop slam by Diop gave Baskonia its first lead, 30-31. Diop and Shengelia kept pacing Baskonia, forcing the hosts to call timeout at 31-36. Diop scored down low and a three-pointer by Vildoza sent Baskonia to a 35-41 lead at halftime. Rabaseda scored in penetration after the break and Baez added 5 quick points but Janning struck twice from downtown for a 42-47 Baskonia edge. Vildoza and a red-hot Janning insisted from beyond the arc, helping the guests to their first double-digit lead, 46-56. Shields took over with consecutive back-door layups and added a corner triple to break the game open, 48-63. Oriol Pauli stepped up with a layup for the hosts and Albert Oliver added a triple for a 53-68 scoreboard after 30 minutes. Shields and Shengelia made free throws early in the fourth quarter while Pauli and Tillie kept the hosts within 58-72. Nothing really changed in the final 6 minutes, as Baskonia used longer possessions to milk the clock and cruised to a well-deserved win.

Pivotal performer

Shields came off the bench and gave Baskonia the spark that it needed, finishing the game with 16 points, 3 rebounds and a PIR of 16 after having scored just 16 points in his last four games combined.

Game-changing moment

Janning took over after the break, hitting 3 consecutive three-pointers. Shields soon added 7 quick points, as Baskonia got a 48-63 margin and kept full control of the game from that moment.

Stellar stat

Baskonia outrebounded Gran Canaria by 36-25, pulling down 14 offensive boards. Six of those came from Vincent Poirier, who finished with 12 rebounds for the second consecutive game.

Did you notice?

Baskonia had allowed 88.6 points in road games before this one, but limited Gran Canaria to just 71. It was a new season-low in scoring for Gran Canaria.

Next game:

Both teams return to action on Thursday. Gran Canaria visits Olympiacos while Baskonia hosts FC Barcelona Lassa.

"First of all, I have nothing bad to say about our effort today. We had a great effort. We started the game with good energy, trying to run. In the second half, when they increased their physical level, we didn't have good answers and they took advantage. We had some problems to score in the second quarter. Then in the third quarter, the difference was the three-point shooting percentage. They scored 5-of-7 and we didn't control our defensive rebounds. They took 17 offensive rebounds and it is really difficult to win with so many offensive rebounds. They are a team that bases their game on their physicality, putting a lot of pressure on the ball, on our point guards. Then in the second quarter, Granger came off the bench to guard Eriksson with a lot of contact, and in that situation, they feel more comfortable. They are a team that look for that level of contact and intensity. We knew before the game we had to match that level and be more solid in rebounds. We had some problems to control it, but I think we put out a good effort."

It is a very important win. Now, after two victories in a row, we are again in the playoffs race. After this victory, it is very important to beat Barcelona at home, and after that, we can say that we are really in that race. I think that, after the first quarter, we started to play defense, especially in the second quarter, when we made a little difference. In the third quarter, we played good defense and after that, the difference was too big. I think that was the key."

"This was a very important game for us. After the win in Tel Aviv, we needed a great game also here. It is always difficult to win on this court but I think that, after the first quarter, we were very solid. We played much better and deserved this victory. I think we did good on defense, especially against their shooters like Eriksson, and had a good rebounding performance. For me, that was the key. It was very important to win and we got the victory. It is really hard to win in the EuroLeague, especially on the road. These two road wins gave us a plus, but they won't be worth much if we don't beat Barcelona at home. We really need our fans to support us in this game. We will evaluate things after the first half of the regular season. We have two games left and we will see where we get. It is true that the first round of games was not much in our favor, with nine road games and six at home, but it will be the other way around from then. We have to hold on and reach the second half of the season with good options."

"I think it is a very important win. We talked about it before, how hard it is to win here in Gran Canaria. I think we did a really good job after the first quarter, playing defense, stopping their fastbreaks and kind of making the game the way we wanted to play. It was a really important win for us. I think we started the third quarter really well. We didn't give them too many easy looks and got a few open shots early. We just made them play at our pace instead of them running fastbreaks and playing at theirs. That was a big key to the win."
