Campazzo's 17 assists lead Real past Valencia

Facu Campazzo set a club record with 17 assists to lead Real Madrid to its seventh consecutive win by downing Valencia Basket 111-99 in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Real improved to 9-3 in the standings while Valencia dropped to 4-8. Thanks to Campazzo's generostiy, five different Real players scored in double figures: Anthony Randolph led the way with 18 points, Trey Thompkins added 14, Jaycee Carroll and Edy Tavares each had 12 and Jordan Mickey 10. Jordan Loyd led Valencia with 21 points, Mike Tobey added 20 and Bojan Dubljevic had 17 for the visitors. Randolph struck three times from downtown and Causeur added two more from beyond the arc to help Real get a 30-29 lead after a high-scoring first quarter. Randolph, Jeffery Taylor and Rudy Fernandez each hit a triple, but Aaron Doornekamp and Tobey kept Valencia within 53-49 at halftime. Campazzo took over after the break, finding good shots for all of his teammates in helping Real boost its margin to 74-64 late in the third quarter. Real kept an 80-70 margin after 30 minutes and quickly extended it to 87-70 behind an unstoppable Carroll to get full control of the game until the final buzzer.

Real found open shots from beyond the arc early on; Randolph hit two and Causeur added two more. Gabriel Deck added a couple of close baskets for a 16-12 Real lead. Dubljevic sank his second triple and got help from Louis Labeyrie and Loyd to bring Valencia within 21-20. Tavares followed a jump hook with a tip-in, but Dubljevic scored down low and fed Guillem Vives for a three-pointer that tied it at 25-25. San Emeterio gave Valencia its first lead, 25-27. Randolph quickly answered with a triple. Tobey took over with an alley-oop dunk before a buzzer-beating floater by Campazzo restored a 30-29 Real lead after 10 minutes. Tavares and Randolph kept pushing the hosts early in the second quarter, but Tobey kept Valencia within 35-33. Doornekamp struck from downtown but so did Taylor and Fernandez for a 43-38 Real lead. Tobey followed a dunk with a triple, however, Real found new go-to guys as Nico Laprovittola and Thompkins restored a 49-45 lead. Carroll hit a stop-and-pop jumper before Doornekamp and Brock Motum brought Valencia a bit closer, 53-49, at halftime.

Loyd and Campazzo exchanged three-pointers right after the break. Deck added a couple of backdoor layups for a 60-54 Real lead. Vives and Dubljevic tried to change things for the visitors, but Campazzo kept finding assists for everyone wearing a white jersey - Deck, Causeur, Tavares, Randolph, dishing 6 in less than 4 minutes to keep Real ahead, 68-60. Carroll and Randolph soon made it a double-digit game, 72-62. Quino Colom banked in a close shot and got help from Tobey to bring Valencia within 77-70, but a wild three-pointer by Carroll restored an 80-70 Real margin after 30 minutes. Carroll downed another triple early in the fourth quarter and followed Mickey's layup with a floater that seemed to break the game open, 87-70, after a 10-0 run. Valencia was not done, however, as Loyd and Tobey each hit a three-pointer and Labeyrie added a long jumper to bring Valencia within 89-80 with under 7 minutes left. Thompkins took over with a layup-plus-foul off a Real timeout and Mickey ignited the crowd with a put-back slam, but Tobey and Alberto Abalde kept the visitors in the picture at 94-87. Thompkins nailed back-to-back three-pointers to seal the outcome, 100-87, as Valencia did not recover in the final 3 minutes.

Pivotal performer

Anthony Randolph played less than 24 minutes but did everything right in leading Real to an important win. He finished the game with 18 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting and 6-of-6 on free throws. Randolph added 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block and 5 fouls drawn for a PIR of 28 - a new season-best.

Game-changing moment

Valencia managed to get within 77-70 late in the third quarter, but Madrid found its regular go-to guy in Jaycee Carroll, who struck twice from downtown and added another basket in a 10-0 run that put Los Blancos way ahead for good, 87-70. His deep three-pointer ignited the crowd at the third-quarter buzzer.

Stellar stat

Real downed 17 three-point shots in tying the second-best mark in club history on just 29 attempts (58.6%). It also dished 30 assists, a new EuroLeague season-best - ALBA Berlin and Anadolu Efes Istanbul had shared the best mark each with 28 assists. Real not only had 30 assists, but only 8 turnovers for a terrific assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.75.

Head Coaches

Real Madrid
"First of all, congratulations to the team for the victory. I think that, offensively, it was a great game for both teams and probably both coaches have the feeling that in the first half, the first team that 'started playing defense' could get the lead. I think that our start in the third quarter was good. We were penalized by entering the foul penalty too early, but the feeling we had is that we had changed the rhythm defensively. That allowed us to get a lead that we managed to keep. I'm happy for the victory; our numbers were really good on offense because it was a very good offensive game, even though our first half was not good defensively. But we improved in the second half and that allowed us to get another win in the EuroLeague, which is what matters. We knew it would be difficult, because they know how to move the ball, find their big men outside... but little by little, we were able to find the way to pull out this win. Facu [Campazzo] and Nico [Laprovittola] were very smart; they combined for 22 assists. They were able to read the pick-and-roll situations really well, looking for open teammates, and they gave us a lot offensively. They generated good shots, and hitting them is what makes the assists number grow. In that sense, I think we moved the ball very well and the fact that Facu gave so many assists is really good. He was able to read their defense really well and knew how to find advantages."
Valencia Basket
"We knew that this was a game that we had to plan long-term, looking for good moments during the game and making the most out of them. We started with a clear mind on offense, hitting shots, but so did they. We didn't quite find the right rhythm on defense. They hurt us a lot with three-pointers early in pick-and-roll situations with their point guards finding passes for their three-point shooters. We tried to change our defense to reach out to those shots and then they found dunks through their big men. In the end, we lacked strength and aggressiveness against their point guards to control the game better. They are very good and their point guard duo combined for 22 assists. Other than that, we tried to do things our way, trying to get as many players involved, but in the end, their effectiveness, poise and competitiveness dominated us. We are satisfied with the way we competed for rebounds and because I think we had a good game on offense, but our defensively level was not good enough to compete against a team like Real Madrid."

Real Madrid
"I am very happy with the way things are going in our EuroLeague games. We know how important each win is. We are happy to get another win, especially since it is the seventh in a row. We are feeling a bit better physically as the games go by and it can be seen lately, especially in the EuroLeague. It was a really high-scoring game. I am all for teams not scoring that many points; we allowed 99 and I think that is a lot. But the outcome was positive. We were very focused, always choosing the best shot and on defense, we improved in the third and fourth quarters, even though Valencia kept fighting until the end."
Real Madrid
"I think we did good. We battled out after a really bad first half. We let them get a lot of easy transition points, but we picked up the defense and the intensity in the second half and we got the win, so I am happy. I had 4 points in the last gam,e but you know, there are ups and downs, it is a long season and as long as we keep our winning streak, that is all I care about."
Real Madrid
"I feel pretty good. We still have work to do, it is a long season, but it was a good win at home. I am getting better every day. My rhythm is coming, my teammates have confidence in me and when I get a chance, I do what I can."
Valencia Basket
"I think we took a step forward on offense today, but we need to definitely step up on defense. Against a team like that, we have to defend a lot better and try to be more physical on defense as well. I am not happy with the result and we have to get ready for the next game."
Valencia Basket
"I think it was a great game for us offensively. We made a lot of steps forwards and it had been a problem for us recently, but unfortunately, the defense wasn't there. Real is a talented team and they made some shots, but you cannot allow over 110 points against a team like that. We have to step up defensively if we want to compete against teams like Real."
