Montepaschi Siena trounced Fenerbahce Ulker 94-65

Montepaschi Siena clinched first place in Group C of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague with a dominating 94-65 victory over Fenerbahce Ulker. Bo McCalebb collected 22 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in leading Siena to an 8-1 record atop Group C. David Moss added 15 points while Rimantas Kaukenas had 13 points and Ksistof Lavrinovic chipped in 10 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in his third Euroleague battle against his identical twin brother Darjus Lavrinovic of Fenerbahce. The guests from Fenerbahce were playing without injured top guard Roko-Leni Ukic, who was replaced in the starting lineup by Lynn Greer. Ulker did not have an answer for McCalebb and the tough Siena defense in dropping to 6-3 in the group. Darjus Lavrinovic had 11 points as did Marko Tomas in a losing effort. And Oguz Savas added 10 points for Fenerbahce.

Shaun Stonerook opened the game for the hosts with a three and McCalebb converted a layup after a steal and hustle play for a 5-0 lead. Kaya Peker finally got Fenerbahce on the board after two minutes of action on a dunk to make it 5-2. But Moss nailed a triple and McCalebb hit a long jumper for a 12-2 Siena advantage and an FB Ulker timeout. Fenerbahce finally controlled the ball a bit better on offense and Darjus Lavrinovic hit a three-point play to trim the deficit to 12-5. McCalebb set up a Moss basket and hit a layup of his own to keep Siena ahead by 9 and Omer Onan’s triple was matched by Kaukenas’s three-ball to make it 19-10. The margin was 21-14 before McCalebb scored the final 4 points of the quarter to give Siena a 27-14 cushion after 10 minutes.

The second quarter started with a Malik Hairston basket and two Ksistof Lavrinovic foul shots to push the lead to 17 points. Fenerbahce went two minutes without a basket to start the quarter until Savas put back an offensive rebound. The lead was still 35-18 with McCalebb resting on the bench midway through the quarter when Fenerbahce used a Mirsad Turkcan inside score and 4 foul shots by Sean May and Savas to trim the margin to 35-24. But Milovan Rakovic hit a put-back and Stonerook tipped in a shot before 2 McCalebb free throws for a 41-25 cushion. And then Marco Carraretto made two long balls in the final minute for a 49-30 Montepaschi lead at the break.

Tomas started the second half with two foul shots and then Tarence Kinsey twice stole the ball and assisted to Peker and Darjus Lavrinovic to cut the margin to 49-36 for a 0-6 streak to start the third quarter. But Moss nailed a three-ball and then Rakovic hit 2 free throws after an unsportsmanlike foul by Kinsey and was followed by another triple by Moss for a 20-point lead, 56-36. An Onan three-pointer trimmed the deficit to 58-43. But Stonerook made 2 free throws to start an 8-0 surge which included a breakaway dunk and layup by Moss for a 66-43 advantage. Siena did not give up and Fenerbahce did not have an answer for McCalebb, who scored 6 straight points to open a 72-45 Montepaschi lead, which Fenerbahce trimmed to 72-49 after three quarters.

Can Mutaf opened the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 21 points, 72-51. But Kaukenas answered the basket and Ksistof Lavrinovic nailed a triple to push the cushion back to 26 points, 77-51. Kaukenas would not let Fenerbahce back into the game and the Siena defense refused to let down as it did not let the guests closer than 24 points the rest of the way.

Montepaschi Siena
"We played a great game from all points of view and in all areas. In the first half, despite leading by 19 points, we could complain because we missed open shots. In the third quarter we played at a great level. We finished the race in check, today we playes very good basketball beyond the victory. To finish first in the group is still very satisfying: we won in Cholet and Vilnius, and these are the things that make a difference, beyond these super games that give us great joy. "
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"Siena has a high-level team and a good system. I hav always had good teams, but have failed against Montepaschi in recent years. They have the same coach, same great defense, the same energy. They chose the right players for this game system and so are able to pursuesuccess thanks to a core of players who have remained. We will not take on any new playeys for the Top 16, we will continue with this roster. "

"We got off to a good start. We played a lot tougher than we did in Istanbul. Then at halftime we heard that Barcelona lost, so we kind of got extra motivated and we came out and played harder. And now we are in first place. So it’s a big win for us. My personal performance doesn’t really matter. The wins are the only things that count for me."
