Nando De Colo - Valencia Basket (photo Valencia Basket)Valencia Basket stayed undefeated in Last 16 Group I by simply overwhelming VEF Riga 80-49 at home on Tuesday. Valencia improved to 2-0 to tie with CEZ Basketball Nymburk atop the standings. Both teams will meet in the Czech Republic for a direct fight for first place. VEF dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to rejoin the Quarterfinals race. Nando De Colo led the winners with 18 points. Nik Caner-Medley added 13, Serhiy Lishchuk had 12 while Rafa Martinez got 10 for Valencia. Kaspars Berzins and Tyler Cain led VEF with 10 points apiece. A layup by Gatis Jahovics gave VEF its only lead, 2-4. Lishchuk and Caner-Medley fueled a 21-2 run that gave Valencia the lead for good, 21-6. Valencia kept a 25-10 lead after 10 minutes and boosted its margin to 29-17 behind an outstanding De Colo. Nothing changed after the break, as Valencia got a 70-30 lead after 30 minutes and cruised to a no-doubt-about-it home win.

Lishchuk got Valencia going with a dunk but Courtney Sims erased it with an off-balance shot and a layup by Jahovics gave VEF a 2-4 lead. Martinez hit free throws and back-to-back triples by Caner-Medley and De Colo made VEF call timeout at 10-4. A three-point play by Lishchuk capped a 13-0 run that gave Valencia its first double-digit lead, 15-4. Cain scored down low but Lishchuk and Martinez made foul shots and a triple by Caner-Medley broke the game open, 21-6. Maurice Bailey tried to change things with an easy basket but Vitor Faverani and Brad Newley boosted the hosts' margin to 25-8. A layup by Antanas Kavaliauskas got VEF within 25-10 after 10 minutes. Martinez nailed a triple early in the second quarter and Rodrigo San Miguel soon helped Valencia to make it a 22-point game, 32-10. Cain scored down low but Martinez and De Colo gave Valencia a new game-high lead, 37-13. Dairis Bertans and Rihards Kuksiks traded three-pointers but De Colo gave his team a 45-16 edge. Free throws by Victor Claver and a buzzer-beating basket by De Colo allowed Valencia to reach halftime with a 32-point margin, 49-17.

De Colo and Lishchuk kept pacing Valencia after the break. A two-handed block by Faverani allowed Caner-Medley to score in the other end, 55-19. Curtis Millage found his first points and Bertans buried a three-pointer by Caner-Medley and De Colo answered to restore a 60-24 margin. Caner-Medley hit a jumper and Claver sent the crowd to their feet with a dunk, good for a 40-point Valencia margin, 64-24. Caner-Medley made free throws and Kuksiks shined with a put-back layup and fed Faverani for an easy basket that forced VEF to stop the game, 70-26. Berzins and Bertans brought VEF within 70-30 at the end of the third quarter. The outcome was clear already so Valencia sat out its main players and started to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Berzins hit a three-pointer and Cain added a layup-plus-foul but by the time Lishchuk dunked it, everything was said and done already. Valencia cruised to an easy win while VEF needs to bounce back right away to improve its chances to reach the next round.

"First of all, I would like to give a direct and initial recognition to Paco Olmos, whose work helped us win this game. This win came due to his work. As for the game, we had an excellent defensive level in the first half. We had a really high defensive level in the second quarter, in which I think we collected 10 steals. That allowed us to build our game rhythm. We didn't have such a great game on offense, but that can get better. The team disconnected in the fourth quarter, which cannot be justified, but I can understand that for some of my players, whose work was extraordinary today. That helped us to win the game. We always have to put out that maximum effort, no matter if we are accurate or not."
BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
VEF Riga
"First of all, congratulations to Valencia Basket. They played a fantastic game and crushed us in the first two quarters. We didn't have a chance to win. Without any doubt, it was our worst game of the season. Our team was not ready to fight. We were not mentally prepared for this game and Valencia played very well, very strong, and hit a lot of three-point shots. We had problems in defense and offense."

Players

FAVERANI, VITOR
Valencia Basket
"I think it is very important to get this win after not being able to qualify to the Spanish King's Cup final eight. We have clear minds and did the most important thing, which was winning the game. Nobody wanted coach Paco Olmos to leave, but we have to stand up and look forward until the end of the season."
BERZINS, KASPARS
VEF Riga
“Valencia started very well. They put a lot of pressure on us. We started a bit nervous and we wanted to win the game in the first quarter, but nothing went well for us. We made a lot of mistakes and we have to play with more patience to win”.
