Unicaja edges Murcia after overtime

In an all-Spanish clash of two Top 16-bound teams that went into overtime, Unicaja Malaga held off UCAM Murcia 89-86 on Wednesday night. Unicaja improved to 4-3, while UCAM finished the regular season with a 4-4 record in Group C. Unicaja will finish third if it wins next week on the road against Zenit St. Petersburg, but will be fourth otherwise. Unicaja led by as many as 69-62 in the fourth quarter, but Jose Angel Antelo hit a three-pointer that sent the game into overtime at 73-73. Jamar Smith hit a pair of triples after which Unicaja never looked back. Smith led the hosts with 18 points, while Adam Waczynski netted 17 on 3-for-3 shooting from both two-point and three-point range. Kyle Fogg added 16 in victory. Facundo Campazzo had 16 points, 7 assists and 4 steals for UCAM and Billy Baron scored 12 in defeat.

Unicaja built its first significant lead when Nemanja Nedovic sparked a run with a three-pointer, and Waczynski hit a pair from long range, followed by one from Smith that made it 30-20 late in the opening stanza. The visitors cut it to 32-24 at the end of first and then scored the first 7 points of second quarter to get back within a single point. Both teams stepped it up defensively as they remained close, and Campazzo beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to make it 43-43 at halftime. The teams traded baskets in the third quarter, which featured four lead changes and seven ties. A last-second fastbreak basket by Fogg made it 62-58 at the end of third quarter, and his triple kept Unicaja in front early in the fourth. Smith’s three opened a 69-62 advantage, but Campazzo and Sadiel Rojas hit from long range for the visitors, and a second-chance basket from Campazzo made it 71-70 going into the final minute. A basket from Waczynski made it 73-70, but Antelo’s three with 4 seconds left sent the game into overtime. Ovie Soko made a pair of baskets in the extra session, but two triples from Smith put Unicaja up for good.

Unicaja Malaga
"There are ways and ways of winning and I don't like to win this way. Maybe we had too much interest in bringing players back, but we cannot play with fire. We have to be more careful with our mistakes because if we don't, all the effort we did until now will have negative consequences. We will try to play a good game against Zenit next week. Our effort allowed us to win the game."
QUINTANA, OSCAR
UCAM Murcia
"We knew it could be a difficult game. We are in a situation in which we need to get good vibes due to the results we are getting in the Spanish League. We got back an important player, Ovie Soko, who gives us a lot of energy, after a month out. I believe that the team improved as the game went on, competing and playing at the physical level this game needed. We outrebounded Unicaja, but did not shoot from three-point range with good percentages. We were better than them in rebounds, two-point shooting and steals, but in the end, three-point shots allowed them to take the lead and eventually get the win. Congratulations to Unicaja, it deserved the win and played good basketball."

"I felt good in my comeback, even though I still lack game rhythm. It was a tough game and we have to work hard to get the win, which is what matters."
CAMPAZZO, FACUNDO
UCAM Murcia
"We fought until the end. In those moments, you need to play good basketball but above all, you have to try to win no matter what. I think thaf it we had done it, we could have got a lot of confidence back, which we need a lot. We are in a losing streak and that is working against us, mentally speaking. We fought hard today and did what we could against a great opponent, but we have to start thinking about the next game."
