Galatasaray Medical Park blasted Union Olimpija 80-59

Galatasaray Medical Park celebrated a spot in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 in its debut season in the competition after blasting visiting Union Olimpija 80-59 on Wednesday at Abdi Ipecki Arena in Istanbul. Galatasaray improved to 4-5 to grab the final Top 16 berth from Group D, thus eliminating Olimpija along the way. The undermanned visitors showed plenty of spirit and hung close for the first half, which ended 39-35. After Deon Thompson cut the lead to 2 early in the third quarter, Darius Songaila and Luksa Andric each scored twice in a 10-0 lead as the hosts took control for good. The lead ballooned to 15 by the end of the third quarter and a pair of dunks by Furkan Aldemir early in the fourth started a chorus of singing by the Galatasaray faithful that did not stop until the final buzzer. Jaka Lakovic paced the winning attack with 16 points, Andric and Aldemir added 11 each and Jamon Gordon dished 8 assists for the winners. Thompson scored a season-high 21 and Boris Rothbart added 18 for Olimpija, which also got 7 points from 16-year-old Erjon Kastrati in his first meaningful Euroleague action. The loss dropped Olimpija to 1-8 this season.

“We are happy and honored to be in the Top 16 in our very first season in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. It was really a very important step for us. I’m happy for three reasons. First of all, I’m pleased because of my players’ sacrifice and performance since the beginning of the season. We had ups and downs, but it was really very important to move in to the Top 16. I’m also happy for Turkish basketball. I hope tomorrow Fenerbahce Ulker qualifies to the Top 16 and all three Turkish teams meet there. And third, I’m also proud of being the head coach of this team. About the game, we started aggressive, but then slow down the rhythm in defense. Our opponent tried to slow down the game and succeed in the first half. But in the second half, we found the rhythm and the tempo and extended our lead. We won a game in which we never lost control.”
FILIPOVSKI, SASO
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"Congratulations for Galatasaray Medical Park for their win. We gave today our maximum for around 30 minutes of the game. For more, we lost a lot of energy. Our opponent has a great system with an excellent coach, Oktay Mahmuti. They knew that sooner or later we would get tired and that’s what happened in the second half. They used that and won the game. I’m satisfied with the approach of my players. Although our scoring skills were not higher today. We played enough good basketball and those young players have a good future."

“We struggled to stop their big guys, especially in the first half. But in the second half, we played good defense and kept on playing carefully in offence. We are happy to win and also to reach the Top 16. It’s a great honor for me to be a part of this great team. We will challenge until the end in the Top 16 and try to move forward.”
KASTRATI, ERJON

"It’s a great honor for me to play in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague... It was a very hard game for our young roster against a very experienced team like Galatasaray Medical Park. We fought really well in the first half, but the things started to change by the third quarter. The experience of our opponent changed the destiny of the game in the second half."
