Newcomer Paul shines for Efes in derby victory

Anadolu Efes Istanbul prevailed over city rival Galatasaray Odeabank 76-86 in what was considered a home game for the latter at the arena they both call home, Abdi Ipekci Arena. In just his second EuroLeague game, Brandon Paul stood tall with 19 points and 5 steals to held Efes snap a two-game slide and improve to 7-7. The lost dropped Galatasaray to 4-10. Galatasaray used a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take the lead and extended it to double figures with a 9-0 second-quarter push, but Efes fought hard to stay close and then turned the game on its head with a 2-20 charge that bridged the third and fourth quarter and made it 60-74, from which the hosts never recovered. Derrick Brown posted 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals, Thomas Heurtel tallied 14 points and 8 assists and Bryant Dunston added 12 points and 8 rebounds for the victors. Blake Schilb led Galatasaray with a season-high 21 points plus 8 rebounds and 5 assists and Alex Tyus posted 15 points, 13 boards and 3 blocks in defeat.

Efes scored the first three baskets, which prompted Galatasaray coach Ataman to take a timeout after less than three minutes of action. Tyus threw down a pair of alley-oop slams – the second coming with a bonus free throw – that got the hosts going. Heurtel made an instant impact off the bench with a jumper, an assist and a layup to boost the Efes advantage to 8-16. Deon Thompson and Schilb each converted three-point plays before Can Korkmaz free throws gave Galatasaray a 10-0 run and an 18-16 lead after 10 minutes. The teams traded baskets as the second quarter began, with Efes tying the score twice, but Jon Diebler nailed a triple and Sinan Guler made a layup in a 9-0 run that put the hosts ahead 31-22. Heurtel hit a jumper to stop the Efes drought, but Guler’s put-back gave Galatasaray its first double-digit advantage at 38-27. Dogus Balbay’s tip-in at the buzzer ended the first half at 44-38. Paul scored 7 points in a row to tie it for Efes at 52-52 midway through the third quarter. Galatasaray pushed back in front before Efes used a timeout to regroup. Tyler Honeycutt’s first points came on a triple that gave Efes its first lead since the first quarter, 58-60, at the end of the third quarter. Dunston’s put-back slam capped a 0-10 Efes run, but even then the momentum remained with the visiting side as Jayson Granger and Paul scored 5 points each to make it 60-74. During that run, Coach Ataman was ejected with 2 technical fouls. Preldzic drilled a pair of triples to get Galatasaray within 76-82 with less than a minute remaining, but Paul iced the game from the line.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We were able to lead from the beginning of the game till the end of the third quarter. We closed the basket well and restricted the outside shots of Anadolu Efes. Today we had to play out of our habit of playing, and Micov's injury pushed us into different lineups. We were effective on defense, but we could not find the rhythm we wanted on offense. Pleiss's foot is in bad condition; he can hardly play. We committed 19 turnovers and this is a serious number and one of the most important factors in losing the game."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We spoke at halftime. In the third quarter, Galatasaray did not have offensive rebounds; we played solid defense and we made the deference at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter. We stayed good. That was the key. When they have easy baskets and second opportunities, it’s difficult to play. Brandon had three practices with us. Today he played good basketball because he scored, but he also played good defense. Maxim [Mutaf] came yesterday and it is not possible to know how much time he will need. He is an experienced player and will be important for us. "

Players

SCHILB, BLAKE
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We started the game well. I think in the second half we were a little fatigued. We had some mental errors and that cost us. Especially in a EuroLeague game, if you have one or two mental errors, that can be a 6-point difference fast. And then we just dug ourselves too deep to try and get out in the end. I thought we played with good energy for most of the game, until the end I felt like we were a little bit tired. That was the turning point. We went down by double digits and we couldn’t come back. "
PAUL, BRANDON
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"I just wanted to come out and bring energy. It started off on defense; I wanted to make sure I brought energy on defense, defended my man, help side, and the offense came. I think when we push the ball, we give ourselves a chance to be successful. Sometimes the guards hold it out too much or we forget what we’re running and we have to be more efficient than that. Once we’re on the same page, it gives us a shot to win the game. "
