Olympiacos invades Milan for first road win

Olympiacos Piraeus confirmed its good momentum by downing AX Armani Exchange Milan 72-93 at Mediolanum Forum on Friday. Both teams now have 8-4 records. It was Olympiacos's first road win. Milan is now on a three-game losing streak. Giannoulis Larentzakis led the winners with 18 points. Tyler Dorsey added 14 while Sasha Vezenkov had 12 for Olympiacos. Shavon Shields led Milan with 26 points while Luigi Datome added 12. Dorsey buried 4 three-pointers in the opening quarter. Thomas Walkup, Kostas Papanikolaou and Vezenkov each added their own for a 25-30 Olympiacos lead after 10 minutes. Milan managed to tie the game, 33-33, on a layup by Kyle Hines but Hassan Martin fueled a 0-10 Olympiacos run and an outstanding Larentzakis helped the Reds get a 45-60 margin at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Olympiacos extended its margin to 53-70 late in the third quarter and did not find much trouble en route to an outstanding road victory.

Vezenkov, Walkup and Dorsey each struck from downtown to give Olympiacos an early 2-9 lead. Datome stepped up with a floater but Moustapha Fall and Dorsey forced Milan to call timeout at 4-13. Vezenkov kept pacing the Reds with a tip-in and Dorsey buried his third triple, good for a 6-18 Olympiacos margin. Vezenkov matched Shields's jumper with a baseline slam and Walkup scored in penetration to make it 8-22. Hines scored down low and Shields hit a three-pointer but Fall dunked and a red-hot Dorsey hit from beyond the arc yet again. Papanikolaou and Devon Hall joined the three-point shootout and Malcolm Delaney brought the hosts closer, 25-30, after 10 minutes.

Troy Daniels followed a triple with a layup early in the second quarter. He got help from Hines at both ends – a huge block on Shaquielle McKissic and a floater – to tie it at 33-33. Olympiacos found a go-to guy in Martin, who scored 6 points in a 0-10 run highlighted by Kostas Sloukas's three-pointer. Datome rescued Milan with back-to-back shots from downtown but Martin and Georgios Printezis restored a 39-52 Olympiacos lead. Nicolo Melli followed Datome's layup with a dunk but Larentzakis struck twice from beyond the arc and Dorsey boosted the Reds' margin to 45-60 at halftime.

Shields followed a three-point play with a jumper soon after the break to give Milan hope at 50-60. Olympiacos went scoreless for almost 5 minutes until Vezenkov stepped up with a layup. Shields kept pacing the hosts but Papanikolaou downed a corner triple for a 52-65 Olympiacos margin. McKissic buried a three-pointer and got help from Fall to break the game open, 53-70. Datome and Delaney hit jumpers to bring Milan closer, 57-72, after 30 minutes.

Livio Jean-Charles scored down low early in the fourth quarter. Milan struggled to score and Printezis solved a broken play with a layup that made it a 19-point game, 58-77. Shields downed a baseline jumper and Sergio Rodriguez buried a six-meter shot to get the crowd involved at 63-77. Larentzakis buried a triple off a timeout and Walkup added a floater that sealed the outcome, 64-82, with 4 minutes remaining. Milan never gave up but Olympiacos had plenty of time to celebrate an important win.

Reds break club first-half scoring record in Milan

Olympiacos Piraeus set a new club record in its Round 12 showdown against AX Armani Exchange Milan. Olympiacos reached the 60-point mark right before halftime when Tony Dorsey hit a pair of free throws. The Reds scored 7 of 11 two-point shots and tied a EuroLeague record for most three-pointers in a half, 12, in 16 attempts. CSKA Moscow previously scored 12 three-pointers before the game against Cedevita Zagreb on December 5, 2014. Olympiacos added 10 of 11 free throws to round a near-perfect first half. Its previous record was 59 points in a first half against FC Bayern Munich in 2013 and Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2014.

Shields shows leadership in tough game

Olympiacos Piraeus defeated AX Armani Exchange Milan 72-93 but one of the main pillars for the hosts stepped up big despite his team's difficult road loss. Small forward Shavon Shields finished the game with a season-high 26 points, hitting 3 of 4 shots from downtown and 5 of 5 free throws. He added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 fouls drawn and a PIR of 28. Those numbers were way better than his season averages of 12.1 points and 13.7 PIR. Shields scored in double digits for the sixth consecutive game and for the 10th time this season. He showed he can be reliable at all times, even when things are not so great collectively.

Olympiacos sets club record from downtown

Olympiacos Piraeus had a stellar performance from beyond the arc in its Round 12 game against AX Armani Exchange Milan. The Reds set a new club record for most three-pointers in a game, downing 18 against Milan. Giannoulis Larentzakis buried 5 shots from beyond the arc and Tyler Dorsey added 4. Sasha Vezenkov and Kostas Papanikolaou each hit 2 triples while Georgios Printezis, Shaquielle McKissic and Thomas Walkup also contributed to the record with one three-pointer apiece. Olympiacos's previous record were 16 three-point shots made, which happened against Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz in 2016 and Khimki Moscow Region in 2020.

When that happens, I know that there have been mistakes and I take responsibility for this lack of organization. We will work to make sure that this will not happen again. Congratulations, of course, to Olympiacos. I think it is really amazing, and it is something that you have to acknowledge, how they came back from the loss in the [Greek] derby. They bounced back with an amazing performance. They were very sharp. They really played well and deserved the win, of course."

It was a team effort, completely, today because we had a great offensive performance in the first half and a very good defensive performance, in my opinion, in the second half. We controlled the pace of the game, which is always very important playing against Milan. We stopped the creativity of Delaney and Sergio (Rodriguez), and that's why, obviously, we won the game. It is a very important win on the road. But from tomorrow, we forget about this win because the EuroLeague is really tough. I think that when the team is working in a good direction, everybody can be involved in our offensive game. We had a lot of assists today.
