Pinar Karsiyaka rallies for pivotal win in Thessaloniki

Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir rallied past PAOK Thessaloniki 74-79 to bring the teams to identical 4-2 records and a share of second place in Group F. However PAOK managed to protect its 6-point advantage from the first meeting between the teams, which would rank it ahead of Karsiyaka if the two teams finished the regular season tied. DJ Strawberry scored 23 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting and 3 steals and Bobby Dixon added 16 points – including 4 game sealing free throws in the final minute – and 8 assists to pace the visitors. Kostas Kakaroudis hit 2 of PAOK’s 4 threes in a 14-2 second quarter that put the hosts ahead 38-25. Strawberry helped Karsiyaka rally with 9 unanswered points in closing the gap to 45-41 at halftime. PAOK rebuilt a double-digit advantage, but Dixon drilled a three to start the fourth quarter and Strawberry heated up with back-to-back threes and a layup to cap a 1-16 charge to lead 66-70. After PAOK tied it at 70-70, the duo scored the next 5 points and Dixon’s accuracy from the line iced the win. Jon Diebler added 10 points for the winners. Kostas Charalampidis paced PAOK with 18 points and Jake Odum tallied 10 points and 6 assists.

Juan Palacios opened the scoring with 2 free throws for Karsiyaka. Julian Vaughn scored the game’s first basket for PAOK. The teams traded baskets early and back-to-back three-pointers by Jake Odum and Michail Liapis put the hosts up 17-13. Dixon tied it with a three and Ceyhun Altay put the visitors ahead 19-20. Marc Carter responded from downtown and Liapis added free throws to give PAOK a 24-20 lead after 10 minutes. Altay brought Karsiyaka within 1 only to see Apollon Tsochlas and Kakaroudis knock down threes and Charalampidis sink free throws as the hosts went up 32-23. A second Kakaroudis triple gave PAOK a double-digit lead before Charalampidis connected from behind the arc to cap a 14-2 charge for a 38-25 advantage. Strawberry ended the Karsiyaka drought from the line and Baris Hersek added a three. Strawberry added a second-chance basket and Mutlu Demir finished a 0-9 Karsiyaka run to get back in the game. Strawberry further closed the gap to 2, but Kakaroudis left PAOK with a 45-41 halftime lead.

Dixon and Altay drew Karsiyaka within 1 and Strawberry tied the game at 46-46. Four POAK players scored in a 9-0 run capped by a Charalampidis three to regain control. Charalampidis converted a four-point play to make it 62-52. Demir’s basket-plus-foul made it 65-57 through three quarters. Dixon drilled a three to start the fourth quarter. Strawberry heated up with back-to-back threes and a layup to cap a sudden 1-16 charge to lead 66-70 midway through the fourth quarter. PAOK awoke in time and tied the game through Tsochlas. Strawberry and Dixon teamed up to push Karsiyaka to a 70-75 cushion. Free throws became key in the closing minute. Dixon made 4 foul shots to protect Karsiyaka’s two-possession lead and the visitors won out 74-79.

"Karsiyaka is a very good team and we knew that. They play very tough defense and ran full court, which was apparent in the fourth quarter, when they controlled the tempo. We played a good first half, especially in offense, but we did not play a good defensive game. We made a lot of turnovers, we lost many balls at the center of the court and gave many balls to the opponent. We were quite good at five against five, but when Karisyaka played zone we made some bad decisions and allowed them to take the lead and eventually the victory. The schedule is tough, but that's what it is and we need to try and be stronger next time. I don't think the players were influenced by the need to win so as to seal qualification. We controlled the game for the most part, we made unacceptable mistakes especially in the defense, we received some big baskets and that's how we lost the game. We need to discuss with the players what went wrong, as you can see our starters did not score a lot, but we got a lot of help from other players."

"Up to the 35th minute, we were in control of the game, but unfortunately we lost. Despite that, we are not disappointed, we have a very tough schedule until December and we hope even further than that and we need to move on and leave this game behind. We need to immediately start focusing on our Greek League game. Our opponents made some big shots at the end, it's true that we could not cope with their zone defense in the fourth quarter, but we have three days to work on our weaknesses and be ready for the next game. We realized we were receiving too many points by halftime, we talked about it and tried to play better defense, but I don't think we did a good job of that."

"It was a very tough game, very physical, both teams played very hard, we made some tough shots down the stretch, they didn't and we got the victory. It was a very important victory for us since we had lost three games in a row and we wanted to make a comeback, gain confidence and stay on track in terms of qualification possibilities. Nothing is over yet though, it's a very tough group and everything is still open. I'm happy about my performance tonight, I had been struggling, but I'm confident about who I am and knew I would be getting back from the slump. Zone defense helped us a lot, it has been very successful for us in the last couple of games. I think that Carter is the most important player for PAOK and my job was to make it tough on him on both ends of the court."
