In an all-German showdown, Brose Baskets Bamberg managed to reach the Last 32 in Group A by topping Telekom Baskets Bonn 52-71 on the road on Wednesday. Bamberg improved to 5-2 and has a 2-0 record against Bonn, which dropped to 3-4. Daniel Theis and Janis Strelnieks led the winners with 17 points apiece. Josh Shipp added 10 while Trevor Mbakwe grabbed 12 rebounds for Bamberg. Ryan Brooks led Bonn with 11 points. The hosts were limited to 1-of-21 three-point shooting, in which was one of the biggest keys to this game. Bamberg used a 2-15 run to overcome a slow start and led 31-35 at halftime. A layup by Benas Veikalas gave Bonn its last lead, 38-37. Theis and Mbakwe stepped up to restore a 41-50 Bamberg margin. The guests improved their defense, allowing just 9 points in the final 10 minutes and cruising to a well-deserved win.

Bamberg went almost scoreless in the opening 5 minutes, in which Veikalas and Dirk Madrich gave Bonn a 5-1 lead. Bamberg found a go-to guy in Strelnieks, who sank back-to-back triples to give the guests their first lead, 5-8. Shipp joined the three-point shootout and a layup by Josh Duncan boosted Bamberg's edge to 7-13. A layup by Theis capped a 2-15 run but Florian Koch brought Bonn within 9-16 after 10 minutes. Mickey McConnell shined with consecutive layups early in the second quarter but Theis and Mbakwe kept the guests way ahead, 13-20. McConnell and Tadas Klimavicius combined for all points in a 6-0 run for a 19-20 Bonn deficit. Strelnieks and Theis stepped up for Bamberg and a triple by Shipp restored a 22-29 lead. Angelo Caloiaro abnd Veikalas tried to change things for Bonn but Theis and Strelnieks gave the guests a 31-35 margin at halftime. Caloiaro scored again, Andrej Mangold shined with a three-point play and a layup by Veikalas put Bonn back ahead, 38-37. Theis shined with a triple and back-to-back dunks by Mbakwe gave Bamberg plenty of fresh air at 38-44. Brooks dunked but an outstanding Strelnieks made it a nine-point game, 41-50. A layup by Klimavicius fixed the score at 43-50 after 30 minutes. Brad Wanamaker gave Bamberg its first double-digit lead, 43-54, early in the fourth quarter. Brooks followed a triple with a dunk but Theis and Wanamaker kept the guests out of trouble, 50-61, with over 6 minutes left. Bamberg improved its defense in crunch time and did not find much trouble to add a critical road win that was worth a spot in the Last 32.

Head Coaches

FISCHER, MATHIAS
Telekom Baskets Bonn
"Today we could have played 10 quarters and we would not have found our rhythm. Bamberg had so many easy layups off of our turnovers that it was practically impossible to overcome the deficit. Going into the next games we have to be more precise as far as our ball movement is concerned and be smarter against any kind of defensive rotation."
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
Brose Baskets Bamberg
"Twenty days ago we came in here and Bonn kicked our behinds. Today we stayed humble and tried to play as big a lineup as possible. A key factor for us was Elias Harris defending Bonn’s guards. I believe there are two or three turning points for each team during a season; for us this was a step into the right direction after a bitter loss against Oldenburg on the weekend."

Players

VEIKALAS, BENAS
Telekom Baskets Bonn
"We did not make our shots from outside for most parts of the game. Bamberg was able to grab many offensive rebounds that led to second chances. For us it is utterly important to be active on the boards in order to gain some kind of rhythm."
THEIS, DANIEL
Brose Baskets Bamberg
“We knew Bonn was a strong shooting team, that’s why we tried to cover so much ground along the perimeter with tall guys. Furthermore, that lineup enabled us to do a lot of damage in the paint on offense.”
