Telenet Oostende never trailed en route to an 84-65 victory over Panionios BC Athens in their Group F opener at Sleuyter Arena on Wednesday night. The Belgian champions set a club record for the greatest margin of victory in a Eurocup game. Oostende built a double-digit lead early in the first quarter, but it was a 16-4 run at the start of the third quarter that opened a 15-point lead and paved the way to victory. Matt Lojeski led the way for Oostende with 22 points plus 7 rebounds, while Wes Wilkinson scored 19, making all 6 of his 2-point field goal attempts. Mario Stojic finished the game with 15 points, and Dragisa Drobnjak scored 11. Giorgos Bogris, Nikos Pappas and Chris Booker each scored 13 points for Panionios in defeat.
Brent Wright hit a jumper to open the scoring and Pappas answered in the same manner for the visitors before both offenses went cold for couple of minutes. Oostende got things settled first, Wright's layup and a Lojeski three-pointer gave the hosts 7-3 lead before Drobnjak sparked an 11-2 run that Stojic capped with a layup-plus-foul for an 18-7 advantage. Panionios managed only one field goal in over five minutes – though it made 5 of 6 free throws during that span – before Ashton Parks hit a jumper to end the drought. At the other end, Wilkinson hit two triples to make it 26-12. Mark Payne answered with couple of layups to make it 26-16 after one quarter. Landon Milbourne scored a layup-plus-foul to begin the second quarter and Pappas added a jumper, which cut the deficit to 5 points, 26-21. However, Wilkinson made a dunk and a jumper, and Lojeski hit couple of shots in an 8-0 run that extended the lead to 34-21. Bogris answered, stringing together 6 points for the visitors, and got help with Payne and Booker each scoring inside and bringing Panionios within 38-32. Then the hosts fell into a drought, failing to score a field goal over the final five minutes of the half. Two free throws by Bogris and a triple from Marios Batis capped a 2-12 Panionios run and made it a 40-37 game at the half.
Oostende opened the third quarter strong, with a Drobnjak layup starting and Dusan Djordjevic capping a 9-0 run that made it 49-37. Much like the start of the first half, Panionios scored only one field goal in the first five minutes of the second half. In the meantime, Stojic scored 6 points, including 4 from the free throw line, and Drobnjak scored another layup that made it 56-41. Pappas and Booker ended a drought for Panionios, but with a Katnic triple and a Lojeski layup, the hosts got back to a 15-point lead and held a 62-47 advantage going into the final 10 minutes. Jean Salumu opened the fourth quarter with a layup and Lojeski extended the margin to 66-47. Payne hit a triple for the visitors, while Bogris and Booker combined to score 9 unanswered points, including Booker’s basket-plus-foul that made it 68-59. However, Drobnjak snapped that run with a layup while Wilkinson and Stojic combined for 11 unanswered points to push the advantage to 81-59 and secure the victory for the hosts.
