Arka surprises Oldenburg with road victory

Asseco Arka Gdynia started its 2019-20 7DAYS EuroCup campaign with a huge road victory, surprising EWE Baskets Oldenburg 74-78 in Group D. Josh Bostic paced Arka with 21 points while Leyton Hammonds and Ben Emelogu both scored 12, and Adam Hrycaniuk added 10. Krzysztof Szubarga distributed 7 assists. Oldenburg was basically a two-man attack as Rickey Paulding scored 21 points and Rasid Mahalbasic picked up 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

Paulding started on fire with 9 points as the hosts opened a 13-7 lead. Hammonds was able to trim it to 15-14 but Nathan Boothe tallied 6 points in an 8-0 run for Oldenburg to close the first quarter 23-14. After the margin grew to 30-18, Bostic helped the guests get closer, but Paulding came back to the floor and added 4 more points as Oldenburg stayed up 40-33 at the break. The mix of Paulding and Mahalbasic pushed the advantage to 49-39 midway through the third quarter. And the lead was still 56-47 before Bostic knocked down 2 three-pointers in an 0-8 Arka run to get the visitors within 56-55 after 30 minutes. Hammonds and Bartlomiej Woloszyn both hit three-pointers in a 2-10 surge early in the fourth to put the guests up 60-65. Oldenburg would pull back ahead but Hammonds' basket made it 74-75 and Emelogu drained a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to finish off the victory.

History made

Arka played in the EuroCup last season for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign, after having appeared only in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague between 2004 to 2013. Last season, the Polish team did not grab a road victory, winning just once at home against Limoges CSP, meaning the upset of Oldenburg was Arka's first EuroCup road win since it beat the Brighton Bears in December 2003.

Pivotal performer

Josh Bostic was Mr. Do-it-all for Arka with 21 points while also collecting 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in picking up a performance index ranking of 24.

Telling numbers

Arka connected on 19-of-21 free throws for 90.5 percent while holding Oldenburg to just 3-of-19 on three-pointers or 15.8 percent.

Next games

Oldenburg hopes to rebound as it travels to Turkey to square off with Galatasaray Doga Sigorta Istanbul. Arka for its part heads back home with the dream of moving to 2-0 as it welcomes Unicaja Malaga.

"Congratulations for the win. I will start with the end of the game. Both teams in crunch time had a chance to win. We didn't make our shots, we didn't get defensive rebounds, and we gave the game away. We dominated the first half and then we lost control of the game in the second half. In the second half, especially at home, you have to play with more authority and more presence. That's the reason. We didn't play the second half like I know we can and the reason we lost this game."
FRASUNKIEWICZ, PRZEMYSLAW
Asseco Arka Gdynia
"I screamed a little bit in the locker room (at halftime) because in my opinion we didn't believe we could go back to Gdynia with a win and our guys were kind of tight a little bit. They were pressing and didn't believe they could make it. And then in the second half we needed a couple of tough shots to go in for Josh Bostic, for (Krzysztof) Szubarga and then all the guys started to believe. 'Szubi' is a very experienced player and has been the heart of the team from day one. And he loves to prove to everyone that he can do it, that he can play on a EuroCup level. And that's what happened. 'Szubi' got crazy a little bit."

Players

"So we certainly did not imagine that kind of start in the EuroCup. We controlled the game in the first half. After that we had problems with the pick-and-roll defense. Bostic had too much room for his three-point shots. Offensively, we did not let the ball run as well as in the first two quarters. Shortly before the end, Gdynia has benefited from a 'happy' offensive rebound, which led to a decisive three-pointer."
BOSTIC, JOSH
Asseco Arka Gdynia
"I told Coach I have to be better, and I will be better. As a leader, I made too many mistakes. It's just early in the season, early jitters. But I told him I will be better as a leader. I love him; he's a great coach. Getting a win for a coach like that makes it even better. For me the points don't matter. I'm a veteran, I just want to win. And I have to be better. In clutch moments, I made too many mistakes. We have young guys on our team and I have to be a better leader. I'm just happy we have a tough group of guys who are hungry, who fight to the very end. I'm excited for this club. It's a big win, but we came here expecting to win. We didn't just come here to lay down. We expected to win, we executed the game plan and thank god we got it done."
