CSKA uses late 14-0 run to go past Khimki

CSKA Moscow took the Leningradka Derby in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by downing Khimki Moscow Region 79-68 at home on Friday. CSKA improved to 11-3 to keep co-leadership of the standings while Khimki dropped to 8-6. Cory Higgins led the winners with a career-high 26 points on 14-of-16 free throws. Nikita Kurbanov added 18 for CSKA. Alexey Shved led Khimki with 16 points. Marko Todorovic added 13 while Tyler Honeycutt had 10 for the guests.

Kurbanov shined early, getting help from Higgins and Sergio Rodriguez to give CSKA a 15-7 lead. An unstoppable Shved and Anthony Gill kept Khimki within 23-16 after 10 minutes. Higgins and Kyle Hines combined for nine points in a 12-2 run that boosted CSKA's margin to 35-18. Marko Todorovic and Malcolm Thomas got Khimki a bit closer, 43-33, at half-time. CSKA only scored from the free throw line in the third quarter, as Shved, Tyler Honeycutt and Todorovic brught Khimki within 57-55 after 30 minutes. Kurbanov and Higgins fueled a 14-0 run, as CSKA boosted its margin to 74-57 and never looked back.

Semen Antonov got CSKA going with an off-balance jumper and Kurbanov soon gave his team a 7-2 lead. Shved stepped up with a driving lay-up and Thomas struck from downtown but Kurbanov scored again, Higgins added a close basket and Rodriguez hit a triple for a 15-7 CSKA edge. Shved followed a floater with a jumper but he didn't find any help. Meanwhile, Higgins kept pacing CSKA while Will Clyburn and Hines scored around the basket for a 23-13 lead. A triple by Gill fixed the score at 23-16 after 10 minutes. Hines scored twice down low and Higgins followed a three-pointer with a fast break slam in a 12-2 run that broke the game open, 35-18, early in the second quarter. But Khimki found a go-to guy in Todorovic, who scored seven points in an 0-8 run that got the guests within 35-26. Rodriguez made free throws and Kurbanov added back-to-back triples but Tyler Honeycutt and Thomas kept Khimki within 43-33 at halftime. Shved took over with a three-point play after the break and a power layup by Gill brought Khimki as close as 43-38. Higgins and Nando De Colo tried to change things for CSKA but Honeycutt and Todorovic kept Khimki within 49-44. Shved stayed on fire with a lay-up-plus-foul and a put-back basket by Honeycutt made CSKA call timeout at 51-49. De Colo, Higgins, Othello Hunter and Clyburn made free throws but three-pointers by Egor Vialtsev and Sergey Monia got Khimki within 57-55 after 30 minutes. Antonov struck from downtown, Higgins hit foul shots and Hunter added a put-back lay-up (CSKA's first two-pointer in more than 18 minutes) for a 64-57 lead. Clyburn followed a lay-up with foul shots and three-pointers by Higgins and Kurbanov broke the game open, 74-57, after a 14-0 run. Nothing changed after that moment, as CSKA ran the game clock down and cruised to a big home win.

Both teams return to EuroLeague action next Friday - CSKA visits Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz while Khimki hosts FC Barcelona Lassa.

"We didn't have everything under control. They came back in a third quarter in which our defense was not there for some reasons, and we did turn the ball over, again, a lot. In the last quarter, though, we only had one turnover. But overall, allowing 68 points says a lot about keeping such a great team, talented team, below 70 points. The most important thing is to say congratulations to my players and to our team, because we bounced back after a loss in Athens, but this is what it is in this EuroLeague marathon. We have to collect victories and today, I give a big round of applause to the whole team, how it worked, how it believed in the win. We had some good moments, of course, and some moments in which Khimki took over, like in the third quarter. They came back within one point, if I am not mistaken, but again, we found ways to score well on their switches, on their mismatches and we supported well their jumpers."

“We managed to contain their main creators so big congratulations to my team for that, and thanks to the fans for creating the atmosphere. I’d like to wish Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates on the 25th.”

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Khimki Moscow Region

"We had our chance to win this game, to put pressure psychologically on CSKA at the end of the third quarter but when we had time to go up, we missed two layups and two free throws. CSKA is a team that knows how to punish things like this. Honestly, I think if we had gone ahead, we may have put some pressure on them. Anyway, we continue - I have to say congratulations to our players for the effort.

"Alexey [Shved], like everyone, had a big desire to win. Sometimes he acts a lot by instinct and needs some help from the bench, and I came here to give him that help, to tell him what he has to do for the team. I am very happy with him - he has been MVP of the round in the EuroLeague twice in the last three games. He is our main player, our leader. He makes mistakes but all the defense is on him and sometimes he needs to read things a little bit better. But I am very happy with him."

"We were just very motivated. We didn't like, obviously, the oucome we had in Athens or the way we performed, so we were much more focused to be more physical tonight and I think it showed. I think when everybody plays aggressive basketball, it is much better for the team. Starting from myself, playing aggressive helped the absence of what we didn't have tonight. So I just tried to be aggressive, pretty much."
RODRIGUEZ, SERGIO
CSKA Moscow
"It was a good game. I think it was important for us after losing in Athens on Wednesday. It was a tough game and we had to come back home and beat Khimki. I think this is a good win for our confidence and now, we have to make the most out of the Christmas Eve. Khimki has a lot of talent and is competing very well in the EuroLeague. We knew this could happen. The team was very balanced in the first half of the game and managed to find situations which we usually don't have to use, but which worked for us."
HONEYCUTT, TYLER
Khimki Moscow Region
"They just shot a lot of free throws that hurt us. We couldn't continue our same aggressive defense. They shot 34 free throws whereas we made only 18 and the difference is doubled. That made a difference in the game. Cory Higgins shot 16 free throws. In general it was a good game. If you want to see where we are with the best teams, this is one of the ways to see how you compare, it shows our character. Of course, we still have a lot of things to work on, we are a new team. We have to play hard all 40 minutes."
