The opening Euroleague regular season game of qualifier Krka Telekom Novo Mesto of Slovenia had all the makings - and all the drama - of a neighborhood rivalry as neighboring Zadar of Croatia came to town on Wednesday. Zadar left town with the prize, too, a miraculous comeback from 20 points down in the second half to win it 91-94 on a three-point buzzer-beater by Marko Popovic, the 19-year-old son of new coach Petar Popovic. Zadar was down 60-40 just after halftime and climbed all the way back to forge and 81-81 tie with 5 minutes to play. But a tie did not become a lead. Krka broke a two-minute stalemate with five quick points that seemed to doom Zadar, down 86-81 near the two-minute mark. Two free throws by Popovic and a follow-up fastbreak my Davor Marcelic cut four points away from the deficit, however, and Rumeal Robinson put Zadar ahead finally with 1:39 to go. But Krka wasn't done. Jaka Lakovic raised up and nailed a three-pointer to give back the lead to the locals, 89-87. Ime Oduok got the tie again for Zadar underneath, then turned around and blocked Mate Skelin at the other end. Marcelic put Zadar up with a layup with 30 seconds to go, but with 9.1 seconds left, Krka tied. With the fianl possession, Zadar got the ball to the youngest player on the floor, the coach's son who wavered in signing until just recently, such were his offers to play college ball in America. Popovic raised up and let it go. All net. After a season of coming close all last season, Zadar wins its first in 2001-02. For one night at least, Zadar stands alone at the top of Group C.

Head Coaches

PIPAN, ALES
KRKA Novo Mesto
"We played excellent in the first part in all aspects, under the rim and in our organizational plan. In the second half, Zadar was better. They stopped our big guys and our offense in general. I am sad about the loss, especially after having such a big lead in the first half. But that is sports and the next time I hope the joy will be ours."
POPOVIC, PETAR
Zadar
"After losing by 20, we were on the brink of the abyss. We went looking for solutions inside, and even when we did get them, Lakovic hurt us. We had to keep fighting, and in the second part, we found our way to the basket. With a dramatic final, we won on a three. What could be better?."

Players

POPOVIC, MARKO
Zadar
"I just got the ball, I wasn't sure it was going in, but I got lucky. I am sure happy."
