Unics Kazan routs Steaua in latter’s Eurocup debut

Unics Kazan took no mercy on Steaua CSM EximBank Bucharest in the latter’s Eurocup debut as it raced to a no-doubt-about-it 94-68 victory. Keith Langford scored 19 points in 23 minutes and Quino Colom dished a club record 13 assists to pace Unics. Colom also scored 10 to make it a double-double. Valeriy Likhodey added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks and Petr Gubanov scored 11 points for the winners, who pulled away early with a 14-1 first-quarter run and never looked back. Aleksandar Rasic led the Steaua attack with 12 points and Titus Nicoara and Marko Marinovic added 10 points each. Nicoara also collected 9 rebounds.

Art Parakhouski and Langford started Unics’s season on the right foot with two quick baskets before Nicoara scored Steaua’s maiden Eurocup points. But soon Unics shook off the visitors with a 14-1 run in which Kostas Kaimakoglou netted 5 points. Likhodey capped the run with a three-pointer that made it 22-7. Rasic and Pankracije Barac each temporarily lowered the Steaua deficit to 12, but 4 free throws by Anton Ponkrashov gave the hosts a commanding 28-12 lead after 10 minutes. Gubanov scored half the points in an 8-0 surge early in the second quarter to make it 38-14. Nicoara countered with a pair of buckets for Steaua, but threes by Langford and Arturas Milaknis continued to grow the Unics advantage. Denis Ikovlev retaliated with 6 straight points, however it did little to change the big picture. Unics coasted into halftime with a 54-27 cushion.

Langford scored the first two baskets of the second half to give Unics a 30-point advantage. Marinovic kept Steaua fighting with free throws and a three-pointer. Rasic added a triple too, which brought the visitors within 64-41 midway through the quarter. Langford continued to score almost at will, but Rasic heated up too. Levente Szijarto fouled out for Steaua late in the third quarter, which ended at 74-52 after free throws by Steaua’s Mihail Paul. Unics held Steaua to just one basket in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, by which time it led 82-54 and the game was all but out of reach for the visitors. Paul and Ikovlev hit threes, but Colom kept dishing assists as Unics played out the final minutes in style.

Unics Kazan
"We have started the Eurocup in a positive way, with a win. If we proceed playing defensively as we did in the first 20 minutes, we will have the chance to aim high. I liked the way my players took this game, their mood and energy. They tried their best in defense and played well in offense. I have the pleasure to say that we are improving on each game. I see the progress, but anyway, we will have to work hard."
SAPERA, HRISTU
Steaua CSM EximBank Bucharest
"It is a rather tough start for us in the Eurocup. We are newcomers in this competition, and felt some pressure. We have some experienced players in our lineup, but we are debutants as a team, so it was pretty difficult for us to start on the road against Unics. Unics is a good team with strong players, coaches and good basketball traditions. It was not easy to play against them. I think the second half better showed our conditions. We showed more energy, and we fought against our opponents. This is the way we shall proceed in the future. I congratulate Unics for the win."
