Gabriel leads Lokomotiv to valuable road win

Former 7DAYS EuroCup champion and last season’s Turkish Airlines EuroLeague semifinalist Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar made a strong start in Group D with a solid 64-72 road win at Union Olimpija Llubljana on Wednesday. Lokomotiv grabbed the lead for good in the second quarter, but the hosts rallied and came within a single possession in the fourth before Lokomotiv pulled away and close the game out. Kenny Gabriel led the way for the winners, scoring 17 points. Evgeny Baburin and Ryan Broekhoff both added 10, while Ian Vougioukas collected 9 points and 8 rebounds. Nikola Jankovic led the home team with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Gregor Hrovat netted 10 in defeat.

Vougioukas and Gabriel shone early to give Lokomotiv a 6-10 lead. Olimpija improved its defense and free throws by Blaz Mesicek, Devin Oliver and Stevan Milosevic put the hosts ahead. Gabriel scored again to fix the score at 12-12 after 10 minutes. Milosevic kept pacing Olimpija early in the second quarter and Gregor Hrovat soon gave his team a four-point lead, 20-16. Gabriel, Dmitry Khvostov, Broekhoff and Baburin all struck from downtown, and Gabriel buried another one from beyond the arc for a 24-31 Lokomotiv lead at halftime. Gabriel stepped up after the break and the guests found a new go-to guy in Vladimir Ivlev, who kept Lokomotiv way ahead, 43-52, at the end of the third quarter. Olimpija was not done, however, as Jankovic and Devin Oliver shone, making Lokomotiv call a timeout, 52-54, with over 7 minutes left. A 0-7 run highlighted by Broekhoff's three-pointer gave Lokomotiv some fresh air, 52-61. Olimpija never got close enough, as Taylor Rochestie fired in crunch time to make sure Lokomotiv sealed a valuable road win.

"Congratulations to Lokomotiv Kuban for the victory. I am sorry, but I have a feeling that Loko was maybe ready for a defeat. I have this feeling on one hand, but on the other hand, when they were in trouble they responded with their quality. There were three breaking points in the game. They showed their quality each time. I cannot say a bad word about my players, because we played solid defense and rebounded well. Still, we cannot allow ourselves to make only seven fouls in one half. We need to be more aggressive in defense and execute better in offense."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIS
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"It was not the best game. It is normal for us, because we are a totally a new team. We built a new roster for this season. It was our first official game. You could tell this. We are still learning about each other. It is important that we won. We were not fluent in the offense, but it is normal. We missed many open shots. Many of my players were a bit nervous, but it is important that we won. I want to congratulate Union Olimpija, because they play good basketball. They played until the last minute."

Players

HROVAT, GREGOR
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"Lokomotiv Kuban is a great team that played EuroLeague Final Four last season. I think we were very motivated before this game. We gave our best and we fought for forty minutes. Lokomotiv Kuban used our few mistakes and deserved the victory at the end."
JONES, KEVIN
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"We played good as a team. I think we played especially well in defense. I am glad we showed good attitude from the start."
