Greens survive late Fenerbahce rally

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens held off a late Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul charge for an 81-78 victory on Tuesday night at OAKA. The Greens had led by as many 13 before Fenerbahce fought back and had a pair of three-pointers by Nando De Colo to tie it in the closing seconds. The first was deemed a two-point shot because De Colo's foot was on the line and he missed the second at the buzzer. The result kept Panathinaikos in fifth place with a 9-5 record, while Fenerbahce slipped to 5-9. Jimmer Fredette tied his personal bests with 22 points on 10-of-11 free-throw shooting. He made 5 free throws down the stretch to help preserve the victory. Nick Calathes, who fouled out with 4 minutes remaining, produced 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. DeShaun Thomas added 13 points and Georgios Papagiannis had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Kostas Sloukas led Fenerbahce with 15 points and 8 assists, Nando De Colo scored 13 and Joffrey Lauvergne 11.

De Colo opened the scoring for Fenerbahce before Thomas got the Greens going with a three-pointer. The Panathinaikos backcourt helped the hosts nose in front, though the Fenerbahce guards kept the visitors close. Calathes's no-look pass to Papagiannis made it 15-10 after 5 minutes. The Panathinaikos lead reached as many as 7 points before Nikola Kalinic and Melih Mahmutoglu came off the bench to bring the visitors within 22-21 at the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back three-pointers by Sloukas and Luigi Datome gave Fenerbahce the lead, 24-29. Fredette sparked a Panathinaikos rally with an assist to Papagiannis and a three-pointer that drew the Greens within 34-35. Ioannis Papapetrou completed the comeback to make it 40-40. A put-back by Lauvergne lifted the visitors to 42-46 at the break. Fredette had 2 steals and 5 points in an 8-0 run early in the second half as Panathinaikos regained control, 52-48. The Greens continued to soar and after Calathes scored on back-to-back possessions, it was 62-53. A Papapetrou triple made it a double-digit lead before Ahmet Duverioglu drew Fenerbahce within 65-57 at the end of the third quarter. Calathes was called for his fourth foul just 1 minute into the fourth quarter and was sent to the bench. After Papapetrou put Panathinaikos up by 13, Leo Westermann provided a spark for the visitors. His triple made it 74-66 with 5 minutes remaining. Calathes came in with less than 4 minutes to play and fouled out within 10 seconds. Fenerbahce kept the pressure on to get within 76-74 after a Datome layup in the final minute. However, after De Colo missed what would have been a go-ahead three-pointer, it became a free-throw shooting contest and Fredette put the hosts up 3. De Colo hit what appeared to be a game-tying triple with 5.4 seconds remaining, but after an official review, it was ruled that he had a foot on the line, rendering the shot a two-pointer and leaving Panathinaikos ahead 79-78. After 2 more Fredette free throws, De Colo had one last shot to tie it at the buzzer, but missed.

Prime-time performer

Jimmer Fredette had one of his finest games in a Panathinaikos uniform with 22 points, 2 assists and 3 steals. He made 10 of 11 free throws – including 5-of-6 down the stretch to help preserve the win. He tied his EuroLeague-best in scoring and his performance index rating of 26 was a new personal best. Most of all, with team leader Nick Calathes on the bench with 5 fouls in the closing minutes, Fredette helped the Greens wrap up the victory.

Milestones

Two players had milestone baskets for Panathinaikos in the first half. Ioannis Papapetrou's first score of the game was a layup thanks to a long Jimmer Fredette assist with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter that tied the game at 40-40. It also gave Papapetrou 1,000 points in his EuroLeague career. In the first quarter, Rion Brown made some personal history with a three-pointer that made it 22-26. That shot represented the first points of Brown's EuroLeague career. Nick Calathes moved into fifth place on the all-time charts with 1,132 assists. He surpassed former MVP Milos Teodosic for a spot in the top five.

What’s next?

Panathinaikos will make a short trip to Israel for its next game against Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv on Thursday. Fenerbahce will also be in action again on Thursday to face Zenit St Petersburg at home.

PITINO, RICK

"I never thought I would say this that Jimmer's defense helped us have an unbelievable third quarter. I didn't think in my lifetime that Jimmer [Fredette] got credit for defense in his lifetime as well. My number one, that this is one of the toughest stretches I have seen as a basketball coach, we had no rest, little practice time, and I haven't seen stretches like this in a long, long time as a basketball coach. So my number one goal has been to get PG [Papagiannis] playing like he did for me last year, and tonight, as I am sure you all recognize, we are +24 and he is no longer playing lazy defense guarding the pick-and-roll. He is uplifting, getting back, he is active as heck... That is very exciting for me to see him get back to playing like he did last year. That is the number one goal. I also would like to pay tribute to Papapetrou, because he was in the hospital today. He had a fever last night and he was in the hospital getting IVs all day, trying to sleep. And 90% of the athletes would not play and he played and guarded it out and was big for us. This team, from the beginning of the year, had one major struggled and that is on defense. It has been a big-time struggle getting to play great one-on-one defense. They are playing the pick-and-roll okay, they are playing the offensive sets okay, what they are not playing well is one-on-one, me guarding you. We are getting beat way too much. In the first game, we were beaten by 20 points one-on-one. So that is our biggest hurdle, getting better defensively and one of the problems we have right now is you come home with one day from Barcelona, you play your asses off, you are fatigued and you have to go play Peristeri, and they played terrific. Sometimes you have to sacrifice and not take a loss for a win, but sometimes you have to sacrifice for the next game and now, we get up tomorrow, practice 11:30, we get on the plane and fly to Tel Aviv against an ultra physical team. We still have Real Madrid, we still have to go at CSKA, at Armani... so this stretch is a killer, but we just have to play every game as if it is our last because I think that, after that, we get on a run. By the time we get in mid-January and late January, I want to be playing much better basketball, like the third quarter tonight. The third quarter was outstanding. And they shot 76% in the first half for two-point shots, and then the second half, we played much better defense, rebounded the ball terrific and that is exciting, because we are 9-5 and improving, and one of the things I am trying to emphasize with the team is paint touching. That when you run your offense, whatever offense you are running, whatever set you are running, that you end it with a paint touch. You get in the lane and touch the paint. We keep a stat on that. So for instance, they were 18-for-33, which is good, we were 31-for-44 in paint touching, which is outstanding. So we want to keep doing that because we don't necessarily have an awesome post-up game. DeShaun [Thomas] is a little undersized, but he does a good job there, have to get PG better, we are working on getting Ian [Vougioukas] into much better shape and we are hoping that by February, Ian is a different person, conditioning-wise. I want to give outstanding credit to my super guard in the national team, Kostas Sloukas, he played 37 minutes, had 8 assists, 5 rebounds and scored 15 points. Obviously, I cannot wait to coach him because he is terrific."

"What else to say but to congratulate Panathinaikos for their victory. Obviously, we played, let's say, a good game in the first half and like in many, many games, the third quarter was very bad for us. Even when we thought we played like that, we came into a position in which we had a possibility to win the game. So more or less, we continued the same kind of mistakes that we have been doing lately. I believe that inside of the team, there is enough quality to play better in everything that is important in a basketball game. Of course, rebounding is one of the most important things and this is something that I believe starts from wish, from desire and from something for somebody being hungry to win the game. So if you have problems rebounding, you need to be aggressive. So at the end of the game, statistics say that we have eight more possessions than Panathinaikos and they shot 10 more free throws, so this means 5 possessions. Final results: 3 more possessions for us. It is always important the balance between rebounds and steals and turnovers. But more important than anything is this in basketball: putting the ball inside of the basket. So I don't really remember now, but I believe we missed 5-6 easy layups. And 5-of-23 three-point shots. From these 23 shots, maybe 2-3 were difficult shots. Everything else were open shots. What I said is that our of 23 shots, 3 were covered shots and 20 were open. So this is basketball."

"My teammates wanted me to get the ball. I feel like if I can get it, I'm going to make those free throws. They have confidence in me and I was able to make them to put us up 3. They were able to get a shot to tie it, but [Tyrese Rice] played great defense. It was a great effort. Our fourth quarter execution wasn't great, so we need to work on that and continue to get better, but it was a great team win."
CALATHES, NICK
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"In the fourth quarter, we couldn't score. It was one of those times where nothing would fall in. We didn’t make our free throws, but our defense won it for us. We got stops when we needed it. It was a big win for us. It's huge against a team like Fenerbahce with no fans. It was a different atmosphere for both teams and we were lucky to get the win."
