Darussafaka dominates boards and Galatasaray

Despite playing without 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season MVP Scottie Wilbekin, Darussafaka Istanbul dominated Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 65-84 in the team’s Top 16 Group E opener on Wednesday at Sinan Erdem Dome. Darussafaka outrebounded the home team 27-47 as JaJuan Johnson, Howard Sant-Roos and Michael Eric all posted double-doubles. Johnson scored a career-high 28 points to go with 12 boards and 3 blocked shots; Sant-Roos set personal bests with 15 points and 10 rebounds in addition to 5 assists and Eric posted 11 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Dwight Hardy paced Galatasaray with 15 points, DaJuan Summers scored 11 and Ege Arar had 10 in defeat.

The teams traded baskets early with Summers’s triple for the hosts and Stanton Kidd’s three-point play for the visitors standing out as the key plays with the score 7-7 after four minutes. Richard Hendrix came off the bench to score twice, included a one-handed alley-oop slam, and gave Galatasaray a 17-15 edge after 10 minutes. After a pair of lead changes early in the second quarter, Johnson’s floater evened things again at 21-21. Darussafaka clamped down on defense in holding Galatasaray scoreless for more than four minutes, during which it scored 10 unanswered points to lead 21-29. The hosts climbed back to within 2, but Darussafaka responded with the next 6 points and a layup by Johnson made it 29-37 at the break.

The hosts drew within 5 twice early in the second half, but Sant-Roos’s steal and slam got Darussafaka back on track. Johnson scored twice in an 0-8 run that made it 36-49 and prompted a Galatasaray timeout. Johnson added another jumper after the timeout – giving him 20 points – before Arar ended the hosts’ drought. Sant-Roos added a three-pointer and free throws before Kidd pushed the margin to 20… And it kept growing. A pull-up triple by Kartal Ozmizrak gave Darussafaka a 39-61 lead. Hardy rallied Galatasray, but Will Cummings’s put-back made it 44-65 at the end of the third quarter. The margin hit 23 a few times in the fourth quarter as Darussafaka started to cruise. A Galatasaray flurry only trimmed the deficit to 17 as the visitors marched home victorious.

"We are making silly mistakes every time we play, we're going through the same scenario even though we are practicing and working over them. But we were a bit shorthanded today as Richard Hendrix played through pain and Scotty Hopson couldn't play many minutes due to his injury problems. We will move forward from this loss."
BLATT, DAVID

"The first game in any Top 16 – or any European competition that you are playing that’s away sometimes gives the away team a little bit of an advantage. The home team knows that they have to win the game and perhaps they feel a little bit of pressure. We came out very focused, we came out very, very aggressive in our approach offensively and defensively and I really thought our guys played well. And I’m happy because, we’ve been struggling for a while without Scottie Wilbekin, whose our best player and was MVP of the first rund of the EuroCup, and it’s tough to play without a guy whose that impactful on the team. But we’ve slowly, but surely been finding our way. Honestly, in our last game against [Anadolu Efes in the Turkish League] here, I thought we played really well, we just didn’t make any shots; we shot horrible from three and we missed 9 free throws. We played a really good team and we could have won the game. Tonight we made some shots and played better. And if you hold the team to that kind of point total defensively, you have a good chance to win."
