Antanas Kavaliauskas - VEF Riga - EC12 (photo Valencia Basket)VEF Riga moved into the driver’s seat in Group J on Wednesday with an impressive 81-59 victory over CEZ Basketball Nymburk. The Latvian powerhouse improved to 3-1, which tops the group, while the Czech champs fell to last place in Group J at 1-3. With a win in either of its remaining Last 16 games, Riga will advance to the quarterfinals. Riga took charge early with the game’s first 9 points and though Nymburk showed spirit in coming back, the hosts pulled away to a 44-31 halftime lead and never looked back. Antanas Kavaliauskas paced the winners with 17 points and 9 rebounds, E.J. Rowland tallied 15 points and 4 assists, Kristaps Janicenoks scored 14 and Will Daniels 10. Pavel Houska led Nymburk with 14 points Vojtech Hruban added 11 points and 6 assists.

The hosts took charge from the start as Kaspars Berzins steal led to a Kavaliauskas layup and Rowland added 5 points to make it 9-0 in less than two minutes. Rado Rancik opened Nymburk’s account with a three-pointer. The visitors worked their way back and after Hruban found Tomas Pomikalek for a triple and Jiri Welsch for a layup to make it 11-10. A Hruban three knotted the score at 13-13. Dairis Bertans put Riga back in front with a three, Janicenoks added free throws and Lauris Blaus made it 24-18 through 10 minutes. Rowland’s second three of the night gave Riga its first double-digit lead, 30-20, early in the second half. Welsch and Hruban kept Nymburk in the hunt and Demond Carter drew the visitors within 32-26. However Riga responded with 6 straight points. The hosts kept the momentum going into halftime as Janicenoks dropped in a three and added a steal and layup in the final minute of the half to make it 44-31 at halftime.

A Daniels’ three-point play a minute into the second half extended the Riga cushion to 18. The visitors never collapsed, though the lead did reach 54-35. Hruban and Rancik tried to ignite something and back-to-back triples by Carter and Rancik brought Nymburk within 11. But Rowland and Berzins kept the hosts focused in taking a 65-48 lead through three quarters. Riga’s lead reach 20 for the first time with Janicenoks free throws early in the fourth quarter. With the outcome clear, the last minutes were without much suspense. The lead peaked at 77-53 as Riga coasted to a big win.

"We played against a strong team, so we knew that it was going to be a tough game. I always say that defense and rebounds are keys to success. Today we didn't have our best shooting night from long range, but defense and rebounds carried us. Thanks to all the fans who supported us. Now we have to prepare for our upcoming games."
GINZBURG, RONEN
CEZ Basketball Nymburk
"Congratulations to Riga, they played very well and deserved to win. In my opinion they are one of the best teams this season in the Eurocup. I don't have much to say about tonight's game, we had too many mistakes and we just didn't play well."

"It was a hard fought game. Obliviously, they are a good team. Before this game we watched a lot of film, so we know what our mistakes were in previous games and what to expect from them. In this game, big key was our defense which I think led us to this win."
