Nizhny sets records, wins a high-scoring all-Russian affair

In an all-Russian clash that opened the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16, Nizhny Novgorod broke its club scoring record en route to defeating Zenit St. Petersburg 113-105 in Group G action on Wednesday. Both teams set new club records for points scored in a single EuroCup game, with Nizhny’s 113 being the sixth-most a team has scored in regulation in the history of the competition, and the most points a team scored in regulation since 2012. DeAndre Kane netted 10 points in each of first two quarters and led Nizhny with 31 points on the night, which also tied a club record. Kane also had 9 rebounds, while Ivan Strebkov had an all-round great performance with 18 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Tomislav Zubcic added 14 points, while Ilya Popov and Siim-Sander Vene scored 12 apiece in victory. Stefan Markovic paced Zenit with 17 points, while EuroCup regular season scoring leader Ryan Toolson and Kyle Landry each scored 16. Sergey Karasev finished with 14 points in defeat.

The first quarter featured five lead changes and as many ties. Kane's three-pointer at the end of the first quarter gave the hosts a 33-30 edge before back-to-back threes from Kane and Strebkov, and a three-point play from Maxim Grigoryev gave Nizhny control at 44-33. The hosts' lead increased to 52-38 before Markovic and Janis Timma started Zenit's rally. Kane had 20 points in the first two quarters, but the visitors were 7 of 7 from the free throw line and cut the deficit to 58-54 at the break. Landry's triple got Zenit within 60-59 early in the third, but Strebkov's three and more baskets from Kane helped the hosts stay in front. A bucket from Artem Vikhorov had Zenit back within 71-70, but Nizhny scored the last 12 points of the third quarter, including back-to-back threes from Kenny Boynton, to open an 83-70 margin going into the final quarter. Kane scored 5 more points in the opening two minutes of the fourth to extend the lead to 88-72. The hosts were not letting up and Popov’s basket broke the 20-point barrier and the century mark as the game was approaching the midway point of the fourth quarter, 100-80. Toolson answered by scoring 8 consecutive points to cut the deficit and visitors used aggressive defense to get even closer before the final buzzer, but it was too little and too late for a comeback.

Head Coaches

STALBERGS, ARTURS
Nizhny Novgorod
"It was a very important win for us, both for the standings and our personal confidence in future games. Our offense was great, but we allowed 105 points. We played thoroughly in the third quarter and let Zenit score only 16 points. On the contrary, in the last quarter, Coach Karasev made experiments with his roster and we missed a lot. Still I’m satisfied with the result. I think it’s better to win 113-105 than 68-60 for example. "
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"I would like to congratulate Nizhny for the win; they played a great game on offense. We tried to press them, but it was useless as they had great support from their fans and some of the players who are not shooters scored a lot. The game left many questions about our defense. Despite the fact that we made a high percentage of shots, we had to work harder at the other side of the court."

Players

KANE, DEANDRE
Nizhny Novgorod
"We came out with good energy and the whole team made a great effort. We flew around, made a lot of open shots and really made Zenit stop. After the break we worked hard and that game showed that everyone in our team is at the right place and in a good mood. "
LANDRY, KYLE
Zenit St Petersburg
"We played horrible on defense today; we didn’t have rotation and couldn’t play one-on-one. That’s why Nizhny made us pay. They played good on offense and deserved to win today. The game was up and down and sometimes we were close, but couldn’t stay consistent for the whole 40 minutes. "
