Barcelona thrashes Darussafaka in team victory

FC Barcelona Lassa grabbed its third consecutive win by thrashing Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul 97-65 at home in Palau Blaugrana on Friday. Barcelona improved to 9-7 in the standings, good enough to rank sixth overall. Darussafaka is at the bottom of the standings with a 2-14 record. Thomas Heurtel led the winners with 18 points. Kevin Seraphin added 12 while Chris Singleton and Jaka Blazic each had 10 for Barcelona. Toney Douglas led Darussafaka with 23 points. Barcelona led 29-13 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 54-27 at halftime, and never looked back.

Jon Diebler and Douglas each struck from downtown to give Darussafaka an early 2-6 lead. Singleton and Blazic fueled an 8-0 run to put Barcelona in charge, 10-6. Micheal Eric took over with a big basket but a red-hot Blazic had 5 points in a 10-0 run that Singleton capped with a three-pointer to make it a double-digit game, 20-8. Diebler answered from downtown but Adam Hanga boosted his team's lead to 24-11. Stanton Kidd followed a floater with a three-pointer but Singleton and Victor Claver restored a 29-16 Barcelona margin after 10 minutes. Seraphin took over early in the second quarter before a layup by Pau Ribas broke the game open, 35-16. Darussafaka kept struggling to score while Seraphin and Claver soon made it a 26-point game, 44-18. Kartal Ozmizrak hit a triple and Oguz Savas added a jumper but Heurtel, Blazic and a dominant Seraphin kept Barcelona fully in charge, 54-27, at halftime. Jeremy Evans scored down low after the break and Dogus Ozdemiroglu added a three-pointer to get Darussafaka a bit closer, 54-32. Barcelona improved its defense and Singleton struck from downtown for a 60-34 score. Heurtel kept pacing Barcelona with a rare dunk, a couple of jumpers and a three-point play that boosted his team's lead to 73-45 after 30 minutes. Nothing changed after that, as Barcelona had already cruised to a convincing home win.

Pivotal performer

Heurtel was the best player on the floor, controlling the game tempo and finishing the game with 18 points on 7-of-9 two-point shooting, 1-of-2 from downtown and 1-of-1 from the foul line. He also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 fouls drawn for a game-high PIR of 26.

Game-changing moment

Barcelona led 27-16 late in the first quarter before using a 17-2 run to break the game open. Claver and Seraphin each had 6 in that run, which allowed Barcelona to get full control of the game for good. Darussafaka had a team PIR of 15 in the first half while five Barcelona players – Seraphin, Hanga, Blazic, Singleton and Claver – had double-digit PIRs of their own by then.

Stellar stat

Barcelona outrebounded Darussafaka by 13-1 in the first quarter and by 27-9 at halftime. The hosts had almost as many offensive boards (8) as Darussafaka's total (9).

Did you notice?

Barcelona had a season-high scoring night – 97 points. It had previously scored 90 against AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan. All 12 Barcelona players scored for the first time this season, too. That allowed Barcelona to get its highest team PIR of the season, too: 121.

Next game:

Both teams return to action on Wednesday in Round 17 as Darussafaka hosts CSKA Moscow, featuring its former star Will Clyburn, while Barcelona visits AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan.

"The team played excellent defense in the first 20 minutes. We controlled the game, and it is difficult to finish the first half with plus-27 and repeat it one more time, to find a new effort. But in general, I am satisfied with our game, how we played. It is always a good feeling to win the first game in a new year. As always, we have to think about the next game."

"I enjoyed this win. Thanks to our very good attitude and responsibility, especially in one-on-one situations, winning direct head-to-head matchups, like Jaka (Blazic) did against their point guard, Douglas, their best player, who is a very talented player. Our goal was, as always, to find the way to stop their game organization, and Jaka did a great job. Our pick-and-roll defense and passing lane defense was at a high level, so I am very happy about that. I am not looking at the standings right now; it is not important right now. What interests me right now is the next games we will play in January. We have a lot of tough EuroLeague games – two of them next week in three days – starting with a road game against a tough opponent like Milan, then Panathinaikos, then Maccabi. We have nine games in 20 or 22 days. Once we reach the end of this round of games in January, we can talk about the standings. This is just an important win, a must-win one. If we want to make it to the playoffs, we must beat Darussafaka. It is important to improve some details of our game. The team is happy not just for the win, but for the confidence it has on defense. Sometimes people talk about confidence on offense, but professional players need confidence on defense. If they have that, they feel comfortable on offense to create."

"We couldn't start the game the way we wanted, especially on defense. They could find all kinds of scoring options from their offense and we couldn't resist. That also had an effect on our offense, which got sloppy and gave them chances for fastbreaks. Then in the second half, they ran away, we started to run after them. They were physically much stronger and deserved this big win. The second half was better than the first one, but I am not satisfied with it, either. In the games we won, we saw how important the physical game is, and today we didn't have it. I think the game is a complete package. I don't separate the first half and second halves. The important thing is that we couldn't play physical at the beginning of it."

"We played a really good game since the first minute. Everybody played hard, with good mentality, and everybody gave their maximum, so it was a nice start to 2019. Like I said before, everybody played well and I felt great on the court. Everybody is happy!"
SERAPHIN, KEVIN
FC Barcelona Lassa
"I have enjoyed today. We have been struggling, but we've won three in a row, and a game like this is good for everybody and for our confidence. When you win, the atmosphere here is always the best. This is why it is so important for Barcelona to win all the time – to have a good atmosphere like this at the Palau."
