DKV Joventut got there by downing Charleroi 73-57

Spurred on by a final-sized crowd, DKV Joventut advanced to the ULEB Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday by defeating Charleroi of Belgium 73-57 to eclipse and eight-point deficit from the first game in their series. Joventut led early and often to successfully negate the 64-56 loss it had suffered in Belgium the previous week. More than 7,800 fans witnessed how their team advances to the next round, where it will face FMP Zeleznik of Belgrade. The hosts were led by the 16 points from Nikola Radulovic, Carles Marco added 14, Zan Tabak 12 and newcomer Paul Shirley bagged 11. Jim Potter paced the guests with 11 points and Jacques Stas contributed 10.

Joventut started strong and after only 4 minutes had neutralized the deficit from the first game by vaulting to a 10-2 advantage. In the next minute, a basket by Radulovic put Joventut on its way to the win, since the lead of the hosts was never threatened. A good percentage in shooting during these first minutes (5 of 8 for Joventut, 1 of 6 for Charleroi), gave tranquility to the hosts who cruised to the end of the first quarter, 20-8. With clear domination in the paint play, the Spaniards increased their lead to 17 points at halftime, 40-27. The duo of centers formed by Tabak and Shirley worked well, and Radulovic and Antonio Bueno also overcame their rivals under the boards. Good leadership by Carles Marco didn't leave any option open to the Belgians. Stas tried to hit hard for his team, but with such a poor shooting percentage as a 19 of 61 overall, and inferiority in rebounds (30 to 41), Charleroi was doomed to the loss.

Some lights of hope arrived for Charleroi midway through the third quarter, when the Belgians came within 46-33, but a three-point play by Shirley in his Badalona debut put things back in their place, 49-33. The third quarter ended 54-40, while the last quarter was a mere formality for the hosts, who cruised to the win thanks to Marco's efficiency in the paint, and started to think already about Zeleznik and the quarterfinals.

"We hardly suffered to win this game. We knew that defending well and without being anxious to comeback in the series, we could do it. The first thing was winning the game. It is true that we started strong in defense, we were also fluent in offense and from there, the game was smooth. I thank all our fans and I invite them to keep on coming see us play in the ULEB Cup quarterfinals, those games are going to be for real. Zeleznik is the leader of the Yugoslav league, good inside players, good shooters. They will arrive here to win and we need to be a great Joventut to beat them. Shirley gives us a good defensive intensity, he has a good hand and he is explosive. He is adapting to the new teammates very well. Radulovic has enough quality as Bodiroga, but he doesn't show it due to his character. I think he enjoys being in this team."
VUCEVIC, SAVO
Spirou Charleroi
"We had a short time to prepare this game. We were victims of our lack of experience in important games like this, and Joventut has it. We didn't have organization in offense and we also had low intensity during the first minutes, which allowed them to score easy baskets."

"We are happy about this win. We had enough patience to come back in a series that was very difficult for us after the first game in Belgium."
